The Name of the Rose

Maybe it's me. Maybe it was the time of day, or my mood. Perhaps the Malbec had something to do with it. But I just didn't get this movie at all.

Oh, it had promise. Sean Connery, a young Christian Slater, and everyone's favorite coy badguy, F. Murray Abraham. It just didn't do it for me.

The story takes place in an abbot, a long time ago. Books and logical thinking were enemies of the church. There are a series of mysterious deaths. All matters of mysteriousness had a biblical and theological answer. Everyone suspects everyone else. A mysterious library exists at the top of the abbot, which only a select few are allowed to visit. There is word that a book is the culprit of the deaths.

Sean Connery plays the wise, old monk who is trying to solve these murders. Christian Slater plays his apprentice. Ron Pearlman also plays a small role, as a stable boy. Nothing outwits Connery, who is determined in solving these murders using rationale and reason. Slater is just kind of along for the ride, learning as a young apprentice should.

F. Murray Abraham is the church's "Inquisition", who arrives at the abbot and seemingly immediately solves the crime. But there is more here than he can tell, as his word is trusted entirely too much, and anyone who argues against him is labeled a heretic as well.

I won't give away the ending, for those loyal Connery fans of you, but let's just say it has a very anti-Hollywood ending.

I don't know, ya'll. I am going to have to give this one a:
