I just received my sampler from logan37 and I couldn't be more happy. What a great assortment of smokes. You look through the cigar catalogs and websites as a newbie and you really don't know what's good or bad. You just can't beat having someone who's been there to save you a lot of bad smoking experiences and lot of money. Thanks again, Rich, for putting this sampler together for me.

Hi, my name is Zach and I am new to the world of cigars. I searched the forums but couldn't really find an answer to my question. I just recently purchased a new humidor from Cigars International. It's nothing special, just a small-ish box, Spanish cedar. From my understanding, I am supposed to soak the inside with distilled water? It came with a small round humidifier, and you just peel the back off and stick it to the inside of the lid. Is this all there is to it?
Again, my apologies for my ignorance.
Thanks for your input!!

I've smoked cigars on and off for about 5 years but never really knew what I was doing. Decided to take it to another level. I've already learned more in the last two days than five years. Other hobbies are golf, fishing, and playing bass guitar(not very well). My goal with this hobby is to learn how to appreciate a good cigar like a nice glass of wine. I know you guys have a wealth of knowledge and I want to learn. I've already placed my order for the newbie sampler. Can't wait!

Tobacco processing

Here are the steps that I will use in the tobacco plant project to process the tobacco:

1. pick the leaves
2. hang the leaves up to color-cure (dry) takes about 3-5 weeks on average.

Here are the steps that I will use in the tobacco plant project to process the tobacco:

1. pick the leaves
2. hang the leaves up to color-cure (dry) takes about 3-5 weeks on average.
3. ferment the leaves
4. age the leaves
5. roll the leaves
6. age the rolled leaves
7. smoke the rolled up leaves

I will accomplish 1-2-4-5-6-7 the traditional way, using methods that have been used for hundreds of years. Nothing modern except a few coat hangers to replace the thread.

Step 3....ah, the fermenting process.
Fraught with danger and very, very, particular in it's conditions, depending on the desired result. The traditional way is to use pilones, or very large stacks of leaves piled up with a thermometer buried in the middle. The internal temperature is monitored very closely, with certain temperature ranges and time durations producing different characteristics in the tobacco, i.e., higher heat for longer times = darker, sweeter tobacco...bingo, the maduro.

Pilones are very labor intensive. This process can take another 3-5 weeks.....and sometimes the tobacco is allowed to "dry" again and age for awhile, then brought back into case (re-hydrated) and fermented again!! Think of the triple fermented wrapper on the Diamond Crown.....three cycles of this entire process with very precisely controlled conditions.

Now, let's talk my reality. I ain't gonna be making any pilones. I ain't gonna be stacking and restacking. Here's what I'm gonna do, it's called sweating:
Once the leaves are color-cured, I'm gonna get me a big ass ziplock baggie. I'm going to bring the leaves back into case, stuff some in a ziplock and put it in the direct sun. I'll take them out every evening, shake them off, let them dry out a bit and then put them back in.....wash/rinse/repeat untill the ammonia smell stops and the sweet tobacco smell takes over. This process should take me about 2-3 weeks per ziplock to ferment to a dark shade....less dark = less time.

I will most likely process 1/3 of my harvest using this manner yet this year. The rest will be aged until next spring and then fermented.

So, whaddya think? Does this constitute "cooking" the tobacco? Would you consider this an adulteration of the tobacco?

Howdy folks. I took the advice of a fellow CS'er and am posting up an intro.
I started in the world of "real" cigars a couple years back when a friend brought some sticks to the golf course. It was a Sancho Panza Double Maduro and let me tell you, it beat the heck out of a Swisher Sweet! LOL After that, I was hooked and got pretty carried away for a while.

I am married with a couple grown (well mostly) kids. I play a lot of golf, not very well sometimes but I keep going back.

My wife Suzanne also enjoys cigars and maintains her own humidor. She's a Martial Arts addict and enjoys a bit of golf as well.

Friday nights are usually herf night at our house, well what's left of it anyway. We had a house fire last year and are still fighting the insurance co, but that's another story altogether. For now, we reside along our burned out residence in a big 5th wheel. Idaho Trailer Trash. LOL

I really enjoy the cigar boards and am a member at a couple other ones (no, not THAT one. lol) and I think this place will make a nice fit for me as well.

My favorites are usually AF Hemmingway, SLR Serie G Maduro, Pepin Blue & JJ, Montecristo (any), Henry Clays for the golf course, and of course a Partagas from "that place" gets me all fired up!

I am also a custom woodworker, and have been known to make some pretty slick ashtrays from time to time. No power to the shop now after the big fire so that part of life is on hold.

Right now, it's just family, work, golf, a fine cigar and a great Scotch when able. Summer time turned me away from the Scotch and right smack dab into the Gin & Tonics! Nothing like Tanqueray 10, a little lemon and tonic water sitting out front with my wife and a good cigar.

I'll do my best not to step on any toes around here. Look forward to meeting you all.

First of all, I'm curious about the mystique that cuban cigars have acquired. I know they're well regarded as being extremely good, but I'm wondering if this is possibly just the allure of the forbidden? (This is all from an American point of view, obviously.)

When I was living abroad, I smoked cubans off and on and didn't find them to be particularly special. Good, to be sure, but no more or less delicious than other cigars of similar price range. Is this due to my immature palette, or does anyone else who (legally) sampled a cuban agree with my opinion?

Secondly, does anyone else get a fairly regular urge to use the restroom after smoking? Is it just me? :smiley11: Sorry if that's TMI lol
