The Spanish cedar is not absolutely necessary, but it helps to buffer humidity. A cooler with a sufficient amount of beads will function just fine until you can get your hands on a box or three.

Though, if you find yourself needing the space of a large cooler, you will probably have a few boxes laying around. As with wooden humidors, a coolerdor will stabilize best when it's kept 50% to 75% full, whether it's filled with cigars, or cedar.

Temperatures in the range you mention are a bit on the high side. I would recommend storage in a closet nearest the center of your house. Temps in these areas tend to be coolest, and fluctuate less. Another option would be a wine cooler conversion.

Only real place in my apt is in a closet, but the only bad part is, the closet is in the bathroom, so hot showers and all will make the temp and humidity go up some.

I see lowes has a Frigidaire 34 bottle cooler for $200. Might go check that out. That would leave me with enough money for my beads.

I also found a 16 bottle Vinotemp on Craigslist cheap.. I think that would be a good size for what I need. I'm really only looking to have 2-3 boxes. 2 boxes of special smokes and 1 box tha is my daily.

I know this is an older thread, but I have finally decided it is time to get myself a real coolidor. I have right now a smaller cooler that does not have a very good seal on it, and I need more room.
My question is this; what coolers has anyone used that they have had good results with? I looked for the cooler that was suggested in the opening thread, but they are no longer available.
I am definately looking for one that is 50 qt or maybe even a little bit less.

    Thanks
    Keith

I picked up a 48 quart coleman from walmart for around $20 recently. Works fine with 1 pound of beads and a few cigar boxes.

I had a 15 or 20 qt coleman for overflow that had a perfect seal. Though it's bigger than you stated, I also used a 150 qt Igloo cooler that had a great seal. It also had slots incorporated into the interior mold that were perfect for shelves when the cooler was on it's side. I had about 3 lbs of beads in it.

Coleman 120 qt here, and a little 12 pk for quarantine of certain purchases. Any cooler of the size you want, that has a GOOD SEAL will work just fine.

They seem have a good seal, haven't given me any problems. Yoou can find them at walmart for less usually.

I am glad you posted this one, I stopped at Walmart on my way home, and was looking at this exact one, they sell it for around $28.00.
I know where I am going on my lunch break tomorrow.

Thank you to all that replied.
