As a matter of fact, I just got back in late July after taking a month of vacation. Brought back some really good cigars for some of the soldiers I smoke with before they left in late August to rotate home to the States. I bought out my local B&M's entire stock of Casa Magna sticks, and brought back a box of Padron 1926 80th maduro's for some select individuals. Next summer my wife and I will have our second honeymoon in the Dominican Republic (once in a lifetime thing) and of course some handmade Dominicans will be coming home with me :D

BTW, Dell refurb replacement warranty parts (MBs in particular) are still crap. I'm thinking all they do is replace the burned out caps and clean them up before sending them out again. They last maybe a year before going bad again.

Yeah I could of told you that cuz I used to work with some Dell certified techs and we'd just shake our heads at some of the stuff we'd get for replacement parts. Another reason why I custom build.

I am looking into having a friend of mine build me a desktop computer (right now all i have is a 17in laptop that is becoming a dinosaur) I play a lot of games: Warcraft 2 and 3, Empires: Dawn of the Modern World, Rome: Total War, Age of Empires. I would like a PC that can handle all of these quite easily without having any lag. I also would like a large amount of memory. Basically, I'm asking if anyone has any suggestions for parts to make a killer gaming computer... I've looked at Newegg, but I'm completely computer illiterate and i don't know what i need and what will work well for me... any suggestions?

I'd go with Radio Shack computers - they're the bomb!!! I'd suggest the Model IV, personally... Ask at the counter - I'm sure they have a few left in inventory. But act quickly - they tend to sell out when they're known to be in stock!

If you don't know what is what under the hood, you're probably going to get taken to the cleaners if you go to a custom computer shop and have them build you a gaming computer.

I don't play many PC games anymore, but when I did, Alienware was the preferred system. Whenever I want to know more about something, I look online for a good user-supported forum - that's how I found this place. You could start by poking around a PC gaming forum and asking there.

I really want to help my buddy build this computer so that i can know how to fix it if i break it. He had given me a list of parts to look into, but since then, my laptop has crashed, and i can't recover that list. I know we were building the whole thing from Newegg, except for the Razer mouse and a keyboard from another site. We had picked the Antec 1200 case and i think the CPU was the AMD Athlon II X4 620 Propus 2.6GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Processor. Basically what i am looking for is a list of the parts that i need to make the computer, a kind of second opinion from my buddy's. If anyone has any suggestions, please post them.

And FYI, I'm a non-combatant here as I'm a civilian contractor but I am a former Marine. Being on an Army FOB, its good source of enjoyment.

I think NewEgg actually has some excellent builder guides right on their site. PC building can be a broad topic, especially when considering a gaming rig.

Just about any Intel Core 2 Duo CPU will provide enough performance for modren gaming. You can overclock them pretty easily, even with air cooling, ending up with $300 CPU that runs at speeds similar to a $1000 CPU. The Intel i7 CPUs overclock very easily, but are a bit more pricey then their older counterparts.

Also, consider which OS you'll be using before you cram your rig full of memory. Most 32-bit OSes can only address ~3GB of RAM, so unless you're going to use a 64-bit version of Windows, the extra RAM is useless.

I would also encourage you to consider using a portion of your budget on an SSD (the Intel X-25M is a perfect choice). Hard disks have presented bottlenecks for decades and SSDs finally address this. I reduced my Left4Dead load times by nearly 60% by using an SSD as opposed to a traditional hard drive.

This is only a start, but I hope it helps.

You do realize he wanted to get the best value for what he wanted to spend, right? Not everyone can just throw a few grand (or more) on a system, even a DIY with parts from online vendors.

Needless to say, I hooked him up with a motherboard and high end AMD that cost a little bit more than a mid-range Intel CPU by itself. I think the most expensive part was the GTX-285 video card with 1GB of RAM. I also spec'ed it with a power supply by PC Power and Cooling, 4GB of DDR3 from Corsair XMS, and a nice 22 inch widescreen from Samsung.




Oh and BTW, it's pedophile. I realize some folks can't spell or use spell check, much less use Google to find Dictionary.com, but seriously .... could you at LEAST try?

LMAO @ Radio Shack's Model IV. Man I can remember when I picked up a Tandy 1000 from them.

I don't like the Razor's need for a claw like grip to make it work. What makes it worse is I screwed up my wrist many years ago and the Razor actually hurts me to use.

And no, I haven't tried a DX-11 card yet. I love my single GTX-285 and it plays CoD, STALKER, and Crysis better than a dual card solution can.
