Thanks for the contest Buzz. I was about to post this, and I accidentally closed the browser
Anyway,
Volume of 1 cigar = (50/64)^2*pi/4 * 5" = 2.395in^3
Volume of pile of peach backwoods soaked in tequila = 2.395*150=359.3in^3 or 0.208cf of flammable material
Therefore, the pile emits 51.98BTU / second @ steady state (whatever that means)
A BTU is defined as the amount of energy required to raise one pound of WATER 1 degree.
Because the room is full of air, and not water, this is where my brain curls up into the fetal position and guesses 299 seconds.

The powers that be might take it all away

I will assume that I can even though I am a brother from another mother....bad bad Buzz.
The one thing I do know is this board has some extremely smart individuals on it. After watching and reading the board over the years I pretty much know who is going be correct regarding what and basically the way I am going to figure this out is copying the person I think is correct at this point based on what I think he knows.
I do not think that you can have the correct answer to this questions with out knowing how cold it is outside and how big the window is, my guess is that brother Eville is very close and brother BW has figured out the time all the cigars would have burnt to a crisp. My guess is 36 seconds and no I am not smarter then a 6th grader. Thanks for the contest and congrats !!!!![]()

Bump - 4 days left guys, get your calculators out and crank some numbers!
Remember, you have to show your work, but it doesn't have to make any sense whatsoever - have fun with it.

Alright, what the hell, here's my guess:
Volume of each cigar (assuming box pressed to make a nice square cigar)
((50/64)*(50/64)*5) =3.051758 cubic inches
Divide by 12 to get cubic feet multiplied by 150 sticks
(3.051758)/(12)*(150) = 38.14697 cubic feet of cigars
Multiply by the Heat Release of 250 BTU's per cubic foot
(38.146397)*(250) = 9536.743 BTU's
It takes .02 BTU's to raise 1 cubic feet of air 1 degree in one hour, but I don't really know the entire volume of the room, but we're not trying to raise the temperature in the entire room, just enough of a raise to activate the heat detector. So, since the detector is 2 feet from the centerline of the fire, I will assume a volume of 4*4*10 to account for heat loss to the sides or a total room volume of 160.
1 BTU/hr x 160 ft3 = (50/160)o F/hr = 0.3125o F/hr
(9536.743 BTU/hr)*(160 ft3) = (9536.743)*(0.3125)o F/hr = 2980.232o F/hr
The starting room temp is 75 and the detector will go off at 125, so the temp needs to be raised 60 degrees.
60 / (2980.232o F/hr) = .020133 hours, or 1.2 minutes.
Sheesh. All this for some crappy, pre-lit & tequila smoked sticks???
Congrats on passing Buzz!
You would be better off marketing them as having a "Pre-toasted foot"
and the winner is...
mail man! PM me your addy and I'll get these burned blunts in the mail.
Thanks for playing guys, and for sending me luck back in October. For those of you geeks out there, here is the answer...
Volume of cigars = V = 150 * 2.4 in^3 = 0.21 ft^3
Heat Release Rate = Q = 250*0.21 = 52.5 BTU/s = 55.4 kW
r/H = 2/10 = 0.2
Gas Temperature = Tg = 23.9 + [(5.38)*(55.4/0.6)^(2/3)]/3.1 = 59.4 degrees C = 138.8 degrees F
Plume Velocity = u = [(0.2)*(55.4)^(1/3)*(3.1)^(1/2)]/[(0.6)^(5/6)] = 2.1 m/s = 6.7 ft/s
Response Time = tr = (100)/[(2.1)^(1/2)]*LN[(138.8-75)/(138.8-135)] = 195 seconds
Ahh, the joys of a good heat detection formula... man am I glad I don't have to take that test again.

Thanks for the contest Buzz & Congrats mailman! Is this two contests in a row Keith? At least you can't win your own contest, right?
Congratulations mail man! Lucky sob...Thanks again for the contest buzz![]()

Congrats mail man -- and congrats to Buzz for passing what musta been a helluva test!
HOLY SHIT, 2 in a row...guess this shows that you don't have to be smart, just real lucky.
Thanks Buzz, and congrats again for passing the test.
Don't worry everybody, I won't be trying to win my own contest.
Keith
Keith you lucky dawg!!! congrats! Thanks for the contest buzz.
Congrats Keith!
I hope the smoke detector would have woken you up before 3 Min's went by.
