    MISCELLANEOUS:

ashauler: Outside with the wifey and dogs... deadheading flowers, lounging.
badwhale: Colorado Maduro wrapper. Nice construction with pigtail cap. Dusty / Sandy texture of the wrapper. Sweet tobacco scent and some musky notes.
buzz: Hanging out with the dogs, listening to some Billie Holiday – man, she was such a fantastic singer. The dogs and I like to discuss/ponder life when we are together in the backyard. Today’s discussion was regarding wine, scotch, cigars, and the wax record spinning Lady Day. So what do they all have in common – and why do I enjoy them so much? What makes me want to take notes on the cigars I smoke? Why do I collect wine bottle labels? Why in the world am I listening to jazz on LP (which requires manual flipping/changing every 10 minutes) instead of letting the mp3 player spit out song after song? There are reasons, very good reasons, I just can’t put them in words... but neither can the dogs, so.
cigarsarge: Nice cool day. I came in from a school today and decided to relax with it.
Cyris: Chillin by the pool watching a flick, enjoying a great cigar.
Daigz: Weather was a little hot but there was a breeze that made it nice enough to sit outside.
Diesel Grinch: Flea market with friends.
    dr. cox: ...
Mangyrat: Watching the grass grow and the cat eat.
Mizicke5273: Two small patches of the wrapper were missing, but did not interfere with the experience.
ndv21: Waiting to see if someone shows up in chat.
Tdre977: The El T destined for the review was pretty beat up, but I had one that had a few months in the box that I chose to smoke.

    prelight taste:

abyr: a little spice, not very strong tasting.
ashauler: nice, dark earthy tobacco flavor, hinting at what lays in store.
badwhale: slight spice / leather on the cut prelight taste.
buzz: woody and a fantastic black pepper spice, maybe some leather.
cigarsarge: woody... Spice it made my lips tingle.
cyris: sweet, cedar, different size than i am used to.
daigz: i didn't bother with the prelight taste because the pull was a little tighter than i'm used to. It loosened up once i started it burning.
diesel grinch: nice taste of tobacco.
    dr. Cox: ...
eville: very slight hint of sweet tobacco. Spongy in some places, solid in others.
    logan37: chocolaty tobacco.
    mangyrat: slightly leathery.
mizicke5273: strong spicy tobacco smell. Sweet taste with slight hints of fruit/citrus.
ndv21: light leathery taste. Not overpowering at all.
prophetic_joe: didn't take a prelight taste. Was talking and forgot.
steele: woodsy i think would best describe it.
tdre977: sweet earthiness. Cigar is a little crooked with some shallow spots at the end.
    -------------------------------------------------------------

    taste (1/3):

abyr: very very smooth, spicy, a little peppery.
ashauler: love the initial draw of this cigar. The balance is spot on from the beginning. Deep earthy tobacco flavor counter pointed with just enough spice to be interesting. This stick is well made, firm with just the right amount of give. Draw is fantastic. I like the oily look of the somewhat veiny wrapper as well. Fine example of properly cured conn. Broadleaf.
badwhale: wow right off the bat. Nice sweet leather flavors with some spice, but not a pepper spice, a more "soft" spice if that makes sense. Creamy aftertaste.
buzz: very nice, wood/spice a little leather with a smooth almost creamy finish – went great with the jagermeister/irish cream combo.
cigarsarge: sweet wood... Coffee... Spice. It hits you right in the face. The initial complexity is amazing. This is a strong cigar.
cyris: cedar, nutty, and leather. Great smoke so far! Think this beer is a little overpowering for the cigar. Burns great, more smoke than i anticipated.
daigz: the first third of this cigar was enjoyable. The draw was a little tighter than i would typically prefer but it wasn't too bad. The taste was of leather with slight earthy tones. The wrap had a moderate amount of oil with it. I had a thin film of oil on my lips after just the first few puffs. This third was creamy, something that i really enjoy with a good cigar.
diesel grinch: first part was fine. The tobacco tasted nice, wasn't anything that stood out. I don't taste all those flavors that others do.
    dr. Cox: ...
eville: full with earth and black pepper.
logan37: at first the smoke was pretty mild with a tiny bit of spice on the finish. It had a mild chocolaty taste with a hint of leather.
mangyrat: earthy with a slight bitter coffee undertone.
mizicke5273: very spicy with lots of smoke.
ndv21: strong leathery taste. I may be confusing it with some earthy tones that remind me of the taste of dirt. But pretty good. Very light spice in the taste and nose exhale.
prophetic_joe: good flavor, earthy and nice. Not overpowering paired well with an ale.
steele: nice smooth draw. Woodsy taste had me wanting more right away. Nice even burn and the ash may have held longer but just couldn't resist dropping it at over an inch. A lot of nice thick smoke, can you tell i really like this one already?
tdre977: earthiness with cocoa. Very nice, seems mild yet there’s tons of flavor.
    -------------------------------------------------------------

    taste (2/3):

abyr: same, and still very smooth, maybe a little less spice now.
ashauler: wonderful... Really hits its stride about 1/2 way imo. The flavor mingles nicely, with the earth and chocolate mixing very nicely... The spice on the finish remains.
badwhale: super smooth and creamy. Sweet leather / tobacco flavors and that "soft" spice, like a baking spice. Very f'n nice. Medium body and full flavor.
buzz: spice went away and gave way to wood and leather now. Still very smooth.
cigarsarge: creamy... Chocolate... Dark spice. There is a lot going on here. I’m sure there are more flavors i’m not getting. It’s still in my face with all that is going on.
cyris: leathery, with cocoa flavor coming out. Hints of coffee? Very mild spice. Very complex, more than i expected. I don't want this to end! Egeekbme's was a little dry (my bad!) and the leaf started getting loose.
daigz: the leather taste stayed strong in the second third but the earthy undertones died out and were replaced by a slightly sweet or nutty taste. It was delicious at this point and the smoke was thick and creamy! The nose exhale gave a real big hit of the sweetness and gave a great burn.
diesel grinch: second part was fine. I was enjoying this cigar but it wasn't anything that was amazing.
    dr. Cox: ...
eville: lots of leather at first, then calmed down to a nice smooth, sweet straw or maybe grass.
logan37: the spice picked up a fair amount. Flavor was more earthy now. The chocolate taste became more subtle. The finish became a slightly nutty.
mangyrat: more of the same but getting a little less earthy.
mizicke5273: lost most of the flavor and not as spicy either. Slight woody aftertaste.
ndv21: a little creaminess has set in making this cigar a little more mild. Pretty enjoyable even though i would like something stronger. It burns pretty fast.
prophetic_joe: no bitterness, very smooth, nice woody, earthy notes. Tasty smoke.
steele: picking up a slight spice flavor still has the woodsy flavor mixed in there too. Smooth draw and still a nice even burn.
tdre977: picking up a bit here strength, getting a distinct cinnamon flavor. Its weird, the stick is burning straight, but the ash is very crooked and falls off between 1/2 and 1 inch.
    -------------------------------------------------------------

    taste (3/3):

    abyr: same.
ashauler: remains as the 2/3rd... Stick softens somewhat but doesn't become "mushy". Draw remains spot on. Only knock i have on this stick is the flaky, unstable ash.... But wtf, i ain't gonna be posing for gq anytime soon so fuck the shirt.
badwhale: more oils taking over now. Needed to give it a purge. Spice getting more intense now, and stinging the tongue a bit. Still has the sweet leathery tobacco, but being a bit overshadowed by the spice and oil that goes away towards the nub, and i'm left with some additional nutty, woodsy notes.
buzz: spice came back just a tad at the end. Didn’t get harsh at the end, very enjoyable smoke.
cigarsarge: all the above with a slight nutty finish. This cigar is amazing.
cyris: little more spice now, more cocoa and coffee flavor too. Dark chocolate "dry" flavor that blends nice with the spice.
daigz: i felt like for the last third i had to really pull on it just to get some smoke out of it. The taste remained more or less the same but seemed to be going back and forth between undertones of earthiness and sweetness. Near the last 2" of the stick the taste started to get a little bitter. I gave it a few more chances and put it out with a little less than 2" left in the cigar.
diesel grinch: third part was fine. Tobacco was good. Didn't get hot and i nubbed it.
    dr. Cox: ...
eville: a little bit of bitterness with more of the grass.
logan37: spice picked up even more. The taste was more leathery with a hint of earthiness to it. The finish had a good spice to it.
mangyrat: the cigar finished almost the same as it started but now it has a little pepper to it.
mizicke5273: even less flavor, and what is left is pretty much the same.
ndv21: it picked up a little bit. I can taste a little more spice and a lot of leather. Very interesting transition.
prophetic_joe: starts getting bitter fairly quickly which i find always happens to me with a lancero type cigar. They seem to get too hot too quick. Woody, earthy flavor still coming through however.
steele: woodsy flavor thinning out now spice more dominant, still a nice smooth draw. Down to about the last 2 inches and got a nice pepper blast but not overpowering at all.
tdre977: getting some bitterness, but it faded quickly, really enjoying the end here, getting lots more smoke and some good creaminess and strong flavors.

    LAST WORDS:

Abyr: This was a very good stick. Mine came in pretty damaged, but it held together, and burned well.
ashauler: Gotta hustle up some more of these before the go completely extinct. I have the new blend resting in the humi now... have tried some of the other vitolas and they aren't the same. I'll have to break out the new version of the lancero soon and see what it has to offer.
badwhale: Just beautiful. I'll have to pick up some of the new blend to compare, however if I ever run across the original blend, I'm getting a box.
buzz: Great cigar, very nice taste. I don’t care for the lancero at all – it just feels too petite in my hand, awkward. It was windy outside which annoyed me – and so the smoke seemed light/faint. The burn was perfect though, which was surprising with the wind.
cigarsarge: This is an amazing cigar. It burned evenly with no relight or touch up needed. It produced great flavor from the start to the finish. This cigar is not to be wasted on the new smoker...It would probably turn them off by the power it contains. It will challenge the seasoned vet in a good way. I wish I had more.
Cyris: One of the best smokes I've ever smoked! I may need to track down a box and stash it away.
Daigz: This is a descent smoke for sure! I loved the taste of it and the appearance was nice. It looked like a real rustic cigar, like something you'd see a cowboy in the old west smoking. Even the band was simple and I love that. There are manufacturers who spend a lot of time with the band design (and they take up a ton of space on the cigar) but this one was a REAL simple band. The smoke was good, but not great in my opinion. The draw was a little tighter than I'd prefer. On a side note, I'm not a fan of the lancero design. I just don't like the way that they feel in my hand. I always feel like I need to be very delicate with it because of the small ring gauge. I tried not to let that influence my opinion but I'm sure that in the long run it did a little. If someone offers you one of these sticks, smoke it and enjoy it.
Diesel Grinch: It was a good smoke and not a great one. I enjoyed it. Depending on price point is if I'll get more. I have a second one I'll burn later to see how I feel.
    dr. cox: ...
Eville: This cigar didn't seem to change a whole lot after it settled into the grass/straw during the second third. While it was nice and burned cool until there was about 1/2 of an inch left, it simply was not very complex, almost to the point of being boring. I received it with a slight crack in the wrapper where it was beginning to unravel, but that did not appear to have any effect on the burn of this cigar.
logan37: Overall this was a very solid cigar. I wouldn't put it up in my favorites, but it's something that I would smoke more of. I think the tight draw I experience was due to the rolling. The stick was pretty tight near the cap. I'll have to see what the other ones I have draw like. I never had to relight, as I usually have to with most lanceros. On a side note, about a month ago I smoked one of the new El Truinfadors in a robusto size. That one burned hot and bitter. It was definitely more full bodied but to the point of being harsh for me.
Mangyrat: Nice cigar. It just didn't have anything about it that really made me want to smoke another one right away. It was like something was missing.
Mizicke5273: I will have to try another, good thing I have an extra!
ndv21: Its not my preferred vitola but it was an enjoyable cigar. I like a cigar that’s a little stronger with some more spice to it. I did get a lot of smoke out of this cigar, which was surprising given its length. I would recommend this to a first time smoker who is willing to try something different and "gradually" move up in strength.
prophetic_joe: My main only problem with this cigar are most likely related to the construction. The cap was cracked when I received it and it seems a lot of them were slightly damaged. I would say from smoking it that this is mostly because the wrapper leaf is a bit fragile. Not a fan of that. My other gripe is that I was kind of talkative tonight, thus I didn't pay a bunch of attention, and it went out quickly if not taken care of.
Steele: I would really like a box of these to put in my collection. This is so far the best one out of the mega review package for me ( although only the third one reviewed lol) Yet again didn't get any pictures I swear I will remember for the next one.
Tdre977: This is probably the 3rd or 4th Lancero I have smoked so far, not sure I like the particular shape, but this smoke was delicious. I felt like it really sang in the last 2 inches.

    EDITOR’S NOTE:

It was not easy finding a supplier that sells boxes of the Original Lanceros, so if you are interested in trying these cigars out you better locate some now. They arrived with a couple damaged sticks (mostly due to the ribbon holding the bundle together). Unfortunately, due to my incompetent packaging (I promise to do better next time), a few of the sticks were damaged further in transit. You can see some of the wrapper issues in the above pictures. A handful of participants commented on the vitola not being their favorite (including me), but the burn on these lanceros is hard to beat. Not one person reported an uneven burn. The ash color, structure, and length were all over the place – not sure why this occurs, but I also don’t know that it is a big deal, just interesting. I am not sure if Ken checked the wrong box for “Strength” or what... maybe he was still dizzy from smoking the JdN. I am interested to try out the new blend in a different vitola to see how it compares.

It is a trend caused by the Internet ... roll something, sell it to one store, build hype, roll no more. Don't have to worry about brand consistency, don't have to stock bales and bales of tobacco, don't have to support a distribution system, don't have to discount the price. I refuse to buy these (and Cuban RE's) anymore. I know there's a desire to smoke the latest and greatest, but chasing HTF's can be a sucker's game sometimes, IMHO.

Yup ! I'm done chasing HTF, I've spent the last years chasing Pete's shit , mind you I have an unholy war chest full now. I'm now focusing my attention on cigar brands That I love and don't play games - LFD, La Aurora, Padron, Camacho & PDR. Throw some AVO's & Davidoff's in and I'm happy.
