    Default Bitter tar taste

Just went to enjoy a Fuente Gran Reserva which I normally enjoy. This time however about 1/2 thru I started getting a horrid taste. Black tar substance oozing out the end. Never experienced this.

Did you punch it or cut it?

    It was a cut.

It is not a frequent occurance, but it is normal. Booked cigars, smoking quickly, punch or v-cuts, cold conditions, and long cigars are all factors. Purging minimizes the impact/lets you enjoy the cigar - I am always purging this time of year.

I will try a purge if I notice this happening again. I assume you just lightly blow thru it when the taste is changing for the worse

Yes, it really is that simple. And it does help quite a bit.

If I get too much tar, I sometimes clip a bit more off, then purge and that usually helps.

I just chew a cigarette and then I find the tar taste less unappealing....

'lightly' is relative. I often blow pretty hard. For fun, put a lighter in front of the cigar and you might get a show - Rocky Patel Vintages are especially impressive in that regard..

You didn't cut enough of the cap off the end of the cigar.

LOL - I've done that with RP Vintage 1990's and you're right on the money, interesting show!

I've found that I too need to purge more often in the winter. Even in my heated man cave (18' trailer).

Sailor, if by Gran Reserva you're talking about the 8-5-8's, then I've had that happen once to me with a Natural (never with the Maduro or Sun Grown) this winter. I purged immediately when it started to taste a little "off" That was about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through it. I then purged every few drags. About 2/3's of the way through I had to trim the end a bit as the tar had built up noticably. I smoked another 8-5-8 Natural on Saturday and just start purging it every now and then before hitting the 1/3 point.

In fact, most my friends have been purged.
