    short version is most diesels make decent HP and torque but the band between torque and horsepower is very narrow so you have to have a lot of gears to keep in the power band. WE had as dump truck that only made 300 HP but made well over 1000 ft lb of torque. If you were empty you could get it up to 60 mph in 4 gears but loaded it took all 10 speeds to get it rolling 60.
