I was only 30 seconds into my second shift last night, on the attack with the puck, skating in past the blue line and passing over to my left wing. Puck got sent behind the net and then passed out to the high slot where two opponents, myself and our right defender all met... and where a hockey stick and my left eye, unfortunately met as well. It wasn't a very hard hit, but it sure hurt like heck - and produced a lot of blood. Scary at first cause I couldn't see, but I was able to get off the ice, stop the bleeding and open the eye a little to check eyesight, which seems to be in working order.
Went to the ER, got a CT scan to help the hospital pay for their fancy machines, and then was admitted because the plastic surgeon couldn't come in till this morning. Surgery sucked but didn't have any problems, getting stitches in the eyelid was not on my list of things to do on Christmas eve, but at least I got to eat some fantastic food. I think it was food.
Anyway, the wifey isn't too upset, but I'll be wearing the full mask for games from now on, which sucks - but probably not as much as eyelid stitches. I used to just wear a helmet, no shield - until I got the concussion... then the wifey said I needed the full mask - I opted for the half shield. I guess she was right after all, now my eye modeling career is up in the air. Here's my ugly mug:
