job madness

so i've been unemployed (off and on) for the past two years. i've been taking care of my son in this time. last week my wife and i 'bought' a mobile home so i needed to get a job really soon. so long story short, Home Depot called me last week for an interview and hired me today. between these times i was figuring that i wasn't going to get the job so i applied at Best Buy. so now they just called. and i have an interview tomorrow. so i'm going crazy cause now i have to choose where to work. anyways, i applied at home depot months ago and just now heard from them and it only took best buy a few days to get back to me. madness i tell you. thanks for listening. i'm going to have a cigar tonight to celibrate and decide what to do. anyways, if anyone has any suggestions on what i should do, i'm open to listen.

With the cost of everything going up I would go with Home Depot. People are more inclined to spend money on their house before going to buy that new toy. Plus I heard that HD has some good growth for employees.

I know people who work, and have worked at both for a while and in my opinion Home Depot would be better in the long run. From what I'v seen best buy is one of those companies that puts up like there good when they hire you then start to fade fast once you've been there for a while.

I would go to the Best Buy interview and check it out. Look at the pay rate, the hours, the benefits, how easy it is to get to from your home, how well you like the neighborhood the store's in, get a general impression. How could it hurt? You might find out, for example, there's a great sandwich shop in the same strip center as the Best Buy. I was going to say "a great cigar store" but that might not be such a good thing from a financial point of view. Anyway, life's all about choices. The more choices you have the better. I believe in exploring all my options.

I would take the Home Depot job and see what kind of part-time hours BB has.

I'd go with Best Buy. I think Home Depot is a lousy company amd doesn't treat their employees very well.

GO with the company that will ofeer you and (your family the most)
Always look at benefits. and other goodies .

Getting paid 1 dollar more at a place with lesser benefits isnt always the smartest move.

Pay rate
Benefits
closest to home (with the current gas prices)
hours (flexible hours if available)
chance for advancement

etc etc..

well i am going to the interview tomorrow for Best Buy. i'm not sure how much they pay. Home Depot pays 8.75 an hour plus a .50 raise after 90 days. there is a cigar shop near both of them so that's not really a problem. another thing, the home depot job is part time (about 30 hrs) and i'm not sure how many hours i would get with best buy. i'll let you tomorrow.

well lets see,
as far as benefits go, i don't really need them. my wife gets really good insurance through her work. one benefit that is looking really good for the HD job is that i can get discount on home improvement things. the mobile home we just bought is from 1966 so it needs some major TLC. other than that, i just need hours. the hours seem a little screwy though so far they don't have me working past 11pm. HD is closer to me. and i'm not looking for either of these to be a career for me so i'm not to worried about advancement.

i'll know more tomorrow. i'll let you all know asap.

ok, i went to the interview yesterday and they said they would call last night if i got the job. well they didn't call. so i don't have to chose. its probably best anyways. BB has to many unnessisary things i want. so there it is, i'll take the Home Depot job.

Although it’s resolved now, I sure can relate to that predicament. I’d worked a couple of years as a contract employee for a natural gas pipeline feasibility study. Nice job but they finally decided to put everything on the back burner and I went on the job hunt. Early on, I interviewed for a job with the FAA. A couple of months go by and I hear nothing. Meanwhile, I put my resume on Monster.com and bang, I get a call from AT&T to interview for the Office Manager position at their new wireless Internet project in town.

So, I got the job and the first couple of weeks are good. Nice place. Nice people. Low key. Then out of the blue, I get a call from the FAA with an offer for that job I’d completely forgotten about. The fed job was a slight pay cut but there’s a retirement plan and other benefits. What to do, what to do. I slept on it, then took the position in the morning.

I could only give the AT&T boss a week’s notice. He wasn’t pleased but he understood. One more week passes and on my last day, providence smiles down upon me. The project had a lot of dissatisfied customers and the word came down to pull the plug. To think, I came >>>this<<< close to being on the job hunt again after turning down a good offer. Instead, I was off to my new job, where I am almost four years later. Sometimes, things just work out.

thanks sean. i really hope this job works out for me. i'm not sure how long i will have for breaks yet though, but i'm sure i could fit a little weaving time in there. lol. i just thought of something, i can get cheap wire at a discount now. :smiley4:
