New Guy Here, Some Help?

Hello all, I'm the new guy here and I have a few questions. I'm new to pleausre of expensive cigars and have a few questions. I have placed an order for some Montecristo's, Montecristo Whites, and some TTT Trinidads. I am now in need of a humidor, correct? So I was thinking about getting either a regular wooden humidor, or a travel humidor. Would there be any harm in keeping a regular humidor in my car? If so, I'm just going to get a travel humidor so that I can always have my smokes with me. Next, once I recieve the cigars, how do I put them in my humidor? Do I take them out of their box, unwrap them/don't unwrap them? What's the deal? Thanks for any help and any tips you could give me as I am new to this. Thanks.

get a 40-50 count humidor.......set it up properly.....

Any kind of humidor in a car is going to hit some major temprature changes, wouldn't advise it.

I suggest you get a three finger cigar case for car use. :smiley20:

Welcome aboard.

1. - Don't keep your cigars in the car. Bad move. Temperature extremes. Too hot, too cold. You will ruin the cigars.

2. - Do buy a humidor. Consider your purchasing over the near future and buy one that will accomodate your purchases. Many guys buy their first humidor only to find later that they bought one that is too small.

3. - You may want to consider making a "Cooler-dor" which is a conventional camping/picnic cooler converted into a humidor. Check out the following link for a detailed description:

4. - If you get a humidor big enough to accomodate boxes of cigars, leave them in their boxes. Check out the following thread link on the "cello on or off" thing. My opinion? Leave em' on.

5. - Fair warning on a couple of things: Cigar smoking is a sickness. You will find yourself hoarding cigars. Eventually you will sell your TV, car, house, whatever, just to buy lots of cigars. I will hold off for now on one particular web site that has many a cigar smoker hooked.....well......what the hell...check out this site.....get your credit card ready! It's like eBay for cigars!

Also, the crowd on this board are a bunch of maniacal, sex crazed bastards. Whatever you do NEVER EVER post a pic of yourself here. If you do you will find it hideously altered at a later date being posted in some other part of this site depicting you in lewd sexual situations. In reality, the crowd here is a really nice bunch of people. We are a widely varied lot. Men and women, a few dolphins and one gorilla (just kidding! everybody knows dolphins can't smoke cigars! The water would put them out!) many races and creeds, many views on sexuality, religion and politics. Hex, the administrator of this site allows free speech but there are rules. No one is here to make enemies (well....maybe one or two! :smiley36: )

6. - Understand that newbies or "noobs" as they are called sometimes innocently ask the same questions over and over as would be expected. This can be trying on some of the senior members here. Before posting a question, try doing a search here to see if it's been asked before.

The internet has a wealth of info available too. But of course, if you have a question don't be afraid to ask. Someone will answer.

I'd go with the 50 count humidor, with 65% beads - kept in the house at a fairly even temperature around 70 degrees. The regular humi in the car is a bad idea as stjohnroe points out.

Travel humi's are fine, but not for long term storage (they dry out fairly quickly). When you transport cigars from one place to another, use a heavy duty zip lock freezer bag. It'll keep the moisture in, and keep the cigars fairly well protected. Or, as CigarSarge suggests, get a 3 finger case. They're fairly cheap, and do the job!

I just went through all this mess...I purchased a small Savoy humidor from Holts.com and I am really impressed with it. I also bought a cheap no name humidor off Ebay, before I went to Holt's, and it is not worth the money. It will be back on Ebay shortly. I recommend Savoy, as it is not so expensive but still a quality humidor. I also bought a Xikar cigar case for trips or what have you. It is just for short term storage/protection. I have heard that heat fluctuations are bad cigars so I don't think a permanent humidor in your car is a good idea. Once you have a humidor, it will need to be "seasoned". I am in the process of doing this now. I bought a Credo digital hygrometer and beads from Heartfeltindustries.com for the humidification device. These beads come recommended from Cigarsmokers.com, and I also recommend them. This is how I seasoned my Savoy after doing some reading. Buy a new sponge and some distilled water from the grocery store. Wet the sponge with distilled water and wipe down all of the inside of the humidor liberally. Then, get some foil, approximately the same size as the sponge, and place the foil inside the humidor. Then place the sponge on top of the foil (so the sponge will not touch the wood). Close the lid and let it sit overnight. This will allow the cedar to absorb the distilled water. The next day, place your beads from Heartfelt inside and remove the sponge, and again let it sit overnight. The beads come in 65% or 70% models. I bought the 65% tube. If on the next day, you are below this mark considerably, add a small amount of distilled water to the beads. Currently I am at 75% humidity, and I think the humidity will drop in a few more days.

They're nice humidors, and not a boatload of money.
Most travel humidors don't hold many cigars, plus I agree you shouldn't expose your entire collection to the extremes of temperature in a car. Some websites will give you a free travel humidor with certain orders (check out Famous).
