recommendations for the wife

Hey guys-
As you can see by my post count, I'm a newbie to the board and also a newbie to the cigar world, so I'm here looking for a little advice from all of you who know cigars.

Here's the deal: while smoking primarily while golfing or out on the patio with my friends, it seems as if my wife has taken an interest in my newfound hobby/interest/passion. She thought it would be nice if we could enjoy a smoke together and I totally agree, not only because I enjoy hanging around with my wife (gasp!) but also because I could see this leading to a much larger budget at the local b&m :smiley15:

However, I've been putting her off until I can get some recommedations from you guys. I'm looking for a nice, medium bodied, medium priced stick, possibly on the sweeter side (no flavored sticks). my tastes tend to run towards the darker, richer smokes and I don't want to overpower her senses and turn her off before I can get her hooked!
Any advice would be much appreciated.

A little help if any at all

As a newbie to this post all I could recomend is to think about what she likes to eat and drink . Does she like strong spicy foods or subtle savory food ? Does she like wine coolers , wine , beer or distilled spirits ? Does she have a sweet toothe ? Cigars from the Dominican Republic tend to mild as well as a Candela wrapper . If all else fails , take her with you to the local cigar shop and ask the clerk what they recommend .

to say that cigars from the D.R. tend to be mild is mis-leading and untrue (LFD chisel,LFD ligero to mention just two).....

i'd start out with some samplers....is there a shop near you that has strngth ratings on the boxes??.....the search is part of the fun......explore all three regions (D.R.,nic,and honduras)...

I know you said you didn't want a recommendation of flavored cigars, but if your wife is a chocolate lover, like most women I know, then you should have her try the new Rocky Patel/Drew Estates Java...that's what got my GF into cigars and now I get to make most cigar events without hassle, and sometimes she even accompanies me...

My wife loves to smoke with me too.. These are her favorites:

CAO Flavors - Eileen's Dream / Karma Sutra / Moontrance. Get the smaller ones in the tubes - for some reason momma's not a big fan of the Robusto sizes...

Drew Estates Java (I even like smoking these with a Pepsi!). Get the Robusto size, not the "waif" (too friggen thin).

Acid Blondie's (they smell very nice - but I'm not a big fan of how they taste - momma likes 'em though).

Kahlua's - again the smaller or Robusto sizes are the best...

My wife actually very much liked the Monte Especial #1!! The smaller ring gauge caught her attention... The #2's have never done it for her - she says she doesn't like smoking a big honking cigar like the #2...

Thanks to all who replied. It definitely helps to have a heads up and a potential list when heading to the shop, especially when I'm making a purchase for someone else.
It's also great to see that there are couples out there who enjoy cigars together. The wife seems to think the cigar life is a "guy thing."

I would recommend the Ashton classic line. I personally like the 8-9-8, and it tastes kind of sweet to me.

question

When I originally requested suggestions, I didn't want flavored smokes recommended, and now that I've thought about it I hope I wasn't ruffling anyone's feathers. I realize that some people smoke the flavored cigars and that's cool.
My question is: Does anyone know what the cigar manufacturers use to make the stick flavored? I'm a little leery because it always seemed to me that although a nice cigar may be potentially hazardous, at least I know (or think I know) what I'm getting. So, maybe if somebody could educate me, I'd probably be more willing to expand my horizons.

I think that Bubba -NJ has the idea, just ask the clerk, or whoever's checking on the humidor that day. I find that if i'm looking for a while, somone'll ask me if i want some help (then again, i may just look suspicious). But i've found that the people who are around cigars all the time tend to smoke a lot, and thus know a lot about them. Talking in person would probably get you better descriptions etc. but chances are, as long as you don't get something like the chissle, or tell her to stand up real fast after she's done smoking the cigar, she'll probably have a good experience.
