Selecting a 50-150 ct desktop humidor?

After browsing through a number of threads and faq's, I've come across some helpful information in a search for my first humidor. However, I'm hoping I can get some responses on a few specifics...

- Digital Hygrometer. I've read where keeping a balanced humidor with an analog hygrometer is "near impossible".

- Glass Top. (& the effects of too much light). How large of a risk is this? Also, it seems a number of the sub $50 glass top humidors don't come with quality glass?

This humidor is to be placed on my desk (very dark rosewood) and is as much for aesthetics as storing the cigars. A storage humidor may be purchased in the future. To summarize, I would like a glass top 50-150 with a well-placed digital hygrometer, but will opt for a closed top with a simple analog hyg. if it's recommended.

I've never been a fan of glass-top humis from an aesthetic standpoint, and the homebrewer in me thinks light is the most evil thing on earth.

If you really want glass, though, don't cheap out. I would think the weakest point of a glass humi would be the point there the glass meets wood. If you don't have a good seal there, you will have many humidity problems.

Of course, I also suggest the heartfelt humidity beads. They do an amazing job of maintaining perfect humidity.

The more I consider it, the more concerned I become about having a glass top. Solid top it is.

For a 50-150 ct solid top, is there a consensus price level for quality? As well as make?

A lot of guys like cuban crafters and savoy. I have a cuban crafters I'm very happy with.

Savoy is a great humidor , works very well and looks gorgeous . I do recommend using the heartfelt beads and replacing the analog hygometer with a digital hygrometer . You may be able to remove the florist foam from the humidifier and refill it with the heartfelt beads . Cost is about $120.00 for a Savoy large at Holts.com .

- Get AT LEAST a 100 count humidor. I GUARANTEE you will run out of room, especially if you continue to participate on this forum. :smiley14:

- If price is an issue, GO WITH CUBANCRAFTERS. For the price, they have by FAR the nicest humidors and their shipping prices are great too! On top of that, their customer service is EXCELLENT. I've seen a few humidors from 'other sites' that are in the SAME price range as cubancrafters and I don't think they're nearly as nice.

- If price isn't an issue, go with Savoy. My local shop had them, and I just about died when I saw how much they were asking for one :). (2-$300 I believe)

- Get the BEADS from Heartfelt, don't waste your time with the inferior sponge humidifier the humidor comes with. These are EXTREMELY low maintenance and most importantly, they get the job DONE. The owner is a great guy and makes sure you're happy!

- Get a digital hygrometer as well. The one I got was guaranteed to be accurate within a degree, it was small, the construction felt solid, and it also gives the temperature. Looks like they're out of stock though:

Just remember, you're going to be spending a LOT more money on cigars than the humidor/humidifier in the long run. Make sure it counts.

I know this can be overwhelming....if it were me, I'd get this:

1) 100 Count Humidor - CLICK ME

2) Aluminum Humidifier 65% - CLICK ME

2B) A tube would work fine too, it'll just take up room. 2 Ounce Humi-Tube

3) How To Setup Your Humidifier - CLICK ME

3) Digital Hygrometer. When looking, I'd check the guaranteed accuracy.

4) Calibrate Your Hygrometer - CLICK ME**

** Note, it may not be recommended to do with a digital hygrometer (I've heard mixed results of the salt test possibly messing up the digital hygrometer).

There, all the work is done for you. :smiley2:

If you're thinking about some mass storage down the road, you can get by fine with a 50 ct.

There are a few people here that have a small desktop humi and a coolerdor.

I use a 50 count humi to keep myself from buying too much. :)
If I'm filling up my desktop humi, I stop buying.

The difference in price between a 50 count & 100 count humidor on CC's site is $10. I'd pay the extra $10 and get 2X the storage... :smiley2:

How much bigger is it, though? I like my smaller humi... It reminds me a little of the "good ole' days" when every desk had a humidor on it. :)

Whitewidow, the humiguage posted by Godfather has been the roundest digital I've seen. Are you thinking about putting it in the circle that is meant for most analog hygrometers? Even though it may not look as nice, my Credo and the humiguage are small enough to fit in the circular indentions on humidors.
Those Cubancrafters have great prices!

Will the Heartfelt Aluminum Bead Holder fit into the slot in Cubancrafters or Savoys?

I'm assuming the separation between the Savoys and Cubancrafters is the exterior finish? Thanks for all the great advice...

Yep, the cubancrafters will...it fits beautifully and comes with velcro to mount the humidifier.

the alum holder for the beads will fit into the humidor slot? Dang, I did not need to hear about this! I think I have to get one now. Nice find on the round dig hygrometer.

There is no slot in the Savoy - the stock humidifier mount's with a magnet and a piece of metal as does the hygrometer . The finish on the Savoy is like a mirror . Just looking at it put's a smile on my mug . :smiley4:
