Cigars VS Customs

as some of you may know, im going to Dominican on wendsday.

there are three of us going, and im the only one who;s bringing back tobacco products. Canadian customs says:

PER PERSON

200 cigarettes---(no thanks)
50 cigars or cigarillos (yes please)
7oz of raw tobacco
some amount of tobacco sticks (what the hell are these)

since theres three people, im allowed 150 cigars.(6 boxes of 25)

Suppose i where to get 3 boxes of 25 (75) and 10 tins of cigarillos(10 count per ten).

then is have 175. What do you think Customs would charge for an extra tin or 2 of cigars. Im assuming its a percentage for GST, and duties..

Does anyone have any expieriances with going over there duty free limit? Whats the average that i might end up paying to get an extra amount into canada

I just dont want to end up paying more in terrifs then i did for the product.

just don't worry about it. Put all your cigars in your checked luggage, not in your carry on. Only claim what you are supposed to claim, 150 cigars. Then anything over that amount keep on you in your jacket, split up between the three of you. Or just pay the duty, it's not too much I don't think.

I think I am leaving on the same flight as you. I leave Calgary at 9:40 for the DR. What about you?

So, ill just throw all 150 in a "customs checking bag" Then ill be safe with it in my luggage? or small quantities in my coat?

i guess they dont snoop threw your luggage or pat you down.. i guess ill risk it.

split the 150 up with your three friends each taking 50 in the checked luggage.

Why not just bring back what you're allowed to bring back?

I used to fly all over the place and one thing I learned was don't mess with customs. Customs exists in a grey area. Until you pass through customs, you are NOT back in Canada. The rules don't apply yet.

Sure, you can probably sneak through with an extra 25 cigars. But say they randomly pull you aside and start countin'. They're not going to say "oh, you must have done your math wrong, you owe us $25 in tax".

A few years ago, I was on my way back from Amsterdam and made the mistake of wearing the same jeans on the plane that I wore the night before to the coffee shop. Needless to say, the drug dogs REALLY liked me. At first, I was nice and relaxed, then it occurred to me that, if they HAPPENED to find a joint that they wouldn't confiscate it and send me on my way.

That's one of the times I'm glad to be well-spoken (especially since I look about 16). The customs officer went through my carry-on and checked baggage, but didn't feel the need to strip search me... :smiley20:

You could hide them in a body cavity... Just a suggestion.

Are a couple of cigars for slightly cheaper than you can purchase them here REALLY worth all the trouble?:smiley2:

what chuck says makes sense...why take a chance....what if the customs agent is having a bad day.....follow the rules and all will be well....

I agree. Also, even if you want to take back more then the limit you can always just declare them and pay the duty. No harm done.

If you go this route, I think you ought to start out with the cigarillos. Good luck getting your buddies to help you out though.

haha, alright, sounds like ill just take back the limit. If i do happen to take back a few extra tins of gars, ill be sure to notify the customs officer about them.
