A potentially stupid question from a newbie

Hello all,

I am a huge fan of this forum and I want to thank everyone for all their help. My question is kinda stupid but please stay with me. I have been smoking cigars for almost ten years but most of the time when I buy cigars, I can never find or remember their names. Am I the only one? I love Fuentes, but if the name is not on the wrapper, I can't remember it. Are the specific names on the box 100% of the time and I just can't find it? I feel stupid asking the tobbaconist. There are so many kinds in each brand, I would love to remember what I bought but can never remember. Any suggestions?

why not start a journal/log.......glue the band to the paper and jot down notes about your experience with that particular cigar.....start your own rating system.....when you find certain cigars that you like..you'll have all the info in front of you.........

I know what brands i like...the problem is the specific name of the cigar within that brand. I either can't find the name anywhere or forget it by the time i pull it out of my humi and smoke it. Thanks for not flaming me for a silly question!!

First of all, do not ever feel stupid asking the tobacconist. If they are a worthy vendor, they should never make you feel uncomfortable. Sometimes box reading can be difficult when one is surrounded by so many similar options. Some shops even recycle boxes to refill with the same smokes bought in bundles.

Secondly, immediately write down what you purchased. After smoking the cigar, add a few tasting notes so you know if you enjoyed it and if you want to go back to purchase more. Another good idea is to pick up labels you can write on yourself for referencing purposes such as these:

I forget all the time too. I think it just takes practice:smiley1: I have a journal I use to record my experience and keep the band.

record the size....length and ring gauge....find out what's in the cigar....wrapper,binder,filler....what is the country of origin...all important.....

the flaming,btw,will begin soon enough....

Almost every shop I've been to has paper and pencils so you can record what smokes you purchase. On most boxes they have the name of the smoke, brand, size, and ring size. Keep a journal and you should be good to go.

I am blessed with a decent memory it seems. When faced with a label to jog my memory, I can remember a specific smoke. The one's I really like or dislike stick in my mind. Then again, I haven't been smoking long either. After a few years, I'll probably start forgetting.

Try doing what I always say I'll do, but never get started. Put together a book with all your labels and cards with the details of the smoke

This thread has actually been useful to me as well. Not that I forget what I like (right now) usually, but from a Journal standpoint. I think it is a great idea... a bit like winetastings. I have always enjoyed a nice smoke, but slowly I am working towards becoming more of an "officionado" on cigars and a journal really seems like a good tool.

I must admit I know little about "wrappers, binders, fillers" etc. as bigpoppapuff mentioned... what would you guys suggest would be a good way to learn more. I have seen some nice looking cigar related books. Any suggestions?

I'm also relatively new to cigars. I use the journal, but also have trouble keeping the MANY different cigars straight. I bought Avery labels, #8163 I think, and use Label Maker Plus to record exactly what the stick is. I record the Mfr, date of purchase, price, ring and length, shape, and anything else I can cram into 1/2" by 2" label. I tried to maintain an inventory for a short time, but that got to be a bit too anal.

For the nekkid sticks, I use blank bands sent me by a Brother - they don't adhere to the cigar. (By the way, I'll do the group buy if you'll turn me on to the source :smiley2: )

That software looks exactly like what I've been looking for! While I have an excellent memory and can practically tell you every cigar I have in my humidor, I can' remember when I purchased them or from where I got them. This cigarbriefcase looks promising. I'll download it when I get home from work today and give it a try!

Thanks. I was already aware of Viper's bands. I currenly have a short supply of self adhesive bands that are more of a cigar band shape with a badge area in the middle. I have a bead purchase on the horizon, so I might throw those in as well.
