Problems raising RH with a new Credo (new hygrometer as well)

I recently purchased a new credo and a new (digital) hygrometer for an older humidor that I have not used since last summer. I'm still a bit of an amatuer on humidors, initially I put the new (pre-charged) credo in the humidor without adding any water; this seemed to be doing nothing to raise the RH. Sp I added some (distilled, of course) water, seemed to still be doing nothing after 2 days. So on Tuesday morning (4 days) after adding some water to the credo on Sunday evening, the RH is still only hovering at 38-40% - does it simply need a week or two or longer to humidify the inside? Is it possible that I have oversaturated it already and need to replace it again?

You will need to season the humidor. There's no telling how long it would take the credo to bring it up to 65-70% humidity. You will also want to look into getting some silica beads to replace that credo. Do a search on "beads" in this forum. The search function is your friend, use it wisely. :smiley37:

I thought that when I stated that it was an "older humidor" that it would have been known that it was already seasoned. "Older humidor"=used before.

Anyways, I still have this humidor that I was talking about when I made this thread way back when. It was a $300 dollar humidor so I'm not still not ready to get rid of it. Every seal seems tight. I seasoned it when I purchased it in the summer of 2005 (that is how it earned the designation of "older humidor"). It worked just fine then but went into storage for a little while. So please, if anybody can review this again and perhaps give me advice as to what may be going on it would be greatly appreciated.....

Ok. I'll bite. I also have an older humidor that I retired from active duty back around '95. So, I was basically in the same boat. I did take time to read the older threads on humidor set-up and the Herfer's guide that Lopaka put together. It is worth the time to read. Yes, there are senior members here that tire of answering the same questions over and over. You can understand. There is no personal insult intended. I also highly recommend checking out the beads if you haven't already.

Here's my take: If your humi has been sitting in storage for a long period (in your case, a couple years), then it probably should be treated and seasoned the same way you would set up a brand spankin' new one. I cleaned mine very thoroughly with small amounts of distilled water and, as you already know, no chemicals. Then I followed the steps in the Herfer's guide and... Presto! It works!

Here's another one for you. I have a second desktop that was passed on to me. It's made from solid rosewood lined with Spanish cedar. The seals aren't great on this one, and the cedar liner is very, very thin. This is an old school construction made for display more than for function. My thoughts are to add a new 3/8" thick liner and improve the seal by creating an interlocking lip on the top and bottom. I would lose a little storage capacity by increasing the liner thickness, but at least I would be able to stabilize the box. Any thoughts?

You do realize that even though it was seasoned however long ago, it may need to be re-seasoned if it has dried out since.

"Older humidor" really has no bearing on WOXOF knowing if it needs to be seasoned. For all we know "older" could mean it has sat in a closed for the past 10 years.

If you follow WOXOF's link, you will see that it goes through the entire process to season (or "re-season" in your case) a humidor.:smiley2:

So if I seasoned a humidor 8 years ago, it should still be seasoned right? How does this work for ya, you need to REseason the humidor. It will not stay seasoned indefinitely.

And as far as an answer to your problems, you got a clickable link that should have the answers. You don't even need to use that oh-so-troublesome search tool.

If you don't like the forum, go find one that will suit your needs better. There are plenty to choose from.

If you are a skilled woodworker, I would say you would have no problem modifying the seal. A bad seal basically makes a nice humidor a nice jewelry or smoking accessory box.

If the seal is bad, you really can't make it any worse. I say go for it and let us know how it goes.:smiley20:

Hey dipshit, if the concept of seasoning a humidor is over your head, maybe you should find another hobby. How about you sell that $300 humidor on Ebay to someone that has enough brain cells to read and understand how to maintain it.

You're right. At this point it's just a fancy wood box. I'll evaluate the project and see if it's worth the trouble to bring it up to speed. It may be better to put the resources into something more practical.

Maybe one of the local guys has some ideas for materials and specs for routing a lip seal. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Sorry you feel that way. But if you would read the rest of the thread, you would see that "screen_name" asked a question regarding setting up a humidor. I was the only one who even bothered to answer his question and welcome him to the forum. He got his "manties" in a wad because I suggested he use the search tool to read up on beads for humidification. There are multiple threads on beads that are worth reading and a simple one word search will find most of them. If he would have done half of the "browsing" he said he did, there's no doubt he would have answered his own questions.

If you look at the dates that he posted, he waited over 18 months to respond to this thread from his initial post. Something tells me he's not planning on being a contributing member here. This is not an "exclusive club for old seasoned members". We have some members here that aren't even shaving yet. We actually welcome newbies to the hobby and to this forum. The only requirement is that you have a genuine interest in the hobby and be respectful of our little chunk of cyberspace.
