Recharging a Humidifier

OK, I searched and searched but couldn't find a specific answer I was looking for. I AM going to order some beads in tubes, but for the meantime:

The consensus states that usually, you will add a few drops of distilled water to the foam "puck" in the humidifier. And every 3rd or 4th time, use the 50/50 solution. Do you ever have to rinse clean and let dry the unit?? To the best of my knowledge, the PG doesn't evaporate, so every time you add the 50/50 solution, you are increasing the ratio of PG to DW in the foam to 60/40, 70/30 etc.

Now, this will go away once I get beads, but for the meantime, can anyone answer this?

I would just use distilled water, don't use that PG solution. PG solution is the same as Anti Freeze that you use in your car. Get rid of the PG solution and just use the water.

Agree with BK, until the beads come just use DW.

I found some plastic condiment cups at Wal-Mart. They fit in my humidors perfectly. Before I got my beads, I was having a lot of trouble with my puck humidifiers...they seemed to humidify based on the position of the moon or something. Anyway, I took them out and put distilled water in these cups. The humidity stabalized and slowly increased until it got to about 67%. At this point I took out the cups and it slowly went down to about 64%. While a slight pain, this teeter-totter humidifying technique was better than the wild results I was getting with my pucks. I was putting the 50/50 solution in them every time and I think I ruined them perhaps.

The beads make everything easy.

How long until you get the beads? Have you ordered them yet? If you have they will only take a week at best to get to you. As long as the humi isn't seeing like 15% humidity you should be fine for a week until the beads get here. On a side note, I have noticed that they are a very Canadian friendly company to order from. They only charge actual shipping for global express (8 dollars) and they declare it as a low value. I have the package in my hands within the week.

It is not worth it bothering with that humidifier that came with the humi. I pissed around with mine long enough before I just said screw it and bought beads. Now I really don't even need a hygrometer. I can just read the beads and they will tell me when they need to be recharged.

Thanks Drew. I assume that's Heartfelt Beads you're talking about?? Cause I ordered some today. And this morning, the hygrometer read about 62 or 63% and I put a few drops of DW in the unit, so I should be cool for a few days.

Yes it is. Great place. I already have a half pound and the aluminum humidifier and am now considering buying another pound of beads.

Do beads ever need to be replaced, like crystals do? I'm considering beads now after my hydrometer started getting funny readings on the humidity. 59% up to 73%! WFT? I do use/used 50/50solution on my humdifier so maybe thats why. Thanks for the info.
