Salt test a built in Hygro

Ok, so I tried the search and couldnt find anything about my questions so I hope I dont get flamed.

So I bought my first humidor and it should be arriving via UPS in a couple days. I was reading the "Seasoning a humidor" thread and had a couple questions. First question is the salt test. I understand what its for, but how do you do a salt test on a hygrometer that is built in to the humidor?

Second question is that the thread said to fill your humi to 75% capacity once you get it balanced. What if you dont have enough cigars to fill it to 75% yet?

To address your second question, if you don't have enough cigars to account for 75% of the volume, you can use sealed tupperware containers. I think there should be a way to remove the hygrometer, but it there isn't somebody else might have an idea

To answer the first question, most built in Hygrometers are analog. I've yet seen a digital for a built-in hygrometer. If it is analog, then you don't really want to use it. Purchase a good digital hygrometer because they are more accurate. From what I've read about they built in hygrometers they are unreliable and most people don't "use" them and have a digital inside the humidor they trust.

However, if you want to use the hygrometer that comes with the humidor, then it should come with a set of instructions for setting it up. Follow them and hope it's accurate.

I know this don’t answer your question, and maybe someone with more experience with a built-in hygrometer can help.

I'll check my post again. What I meant is you want to put enough cigars in the beginning to fill it to at least 75%. Then keep it at that capacity until it balances. After you balance the humidor, then you don’t have to worry as much about how many smokes you have in the humi. It will stay balanced. You don’t want to empty it completely. However if you smoke it down to 50% capacity, it’ll still stay balanced and you don’t have to worry about spikes in the humidity.

However, as mentioned in the earlier post, if you don't have enough smokes to fill to 75%, then use Tupperware boxes to fill the space, that will help.

Cool thanks for the advice. Ill get a digital one soon. As for filling it to 75%, I guess Ill just have to buy some more sticks 8)

Yeah, I would suggest getting a digital to get more accurate results. If you want to use your analog as well, salt test the digital to find out how much it's off by, then toss it in the humi, let it get acclimated for a day, and check the difference between the digital and the built in. And subtract out the margin of error from the salt test

1st question - A. Maybe there's a way to remove the hygrometer. B. Get the heartfelt beads and forget about it. C. Get a digital hygrometer(you can get one for under $20).

2nd question - The tupperware works good or you can buy blocks of spanish cedar off of ebay(more expensive than the tupperware). The easiest way to do it is buy some more smokes. Cigarbid is a good place, the Newbie Sampler Trade is even better of a deal.

When I first got my humidor I purchased some JR alternatives(I didn't know any better) to take up some space. I still have about 15 of the 20 sticks. They taste like hay with a hint of horse shit. But I keep them in a small tupperdor for kindlin. :smiley11:
