Interesting storage idea....

I was at tampahumidor.com store today. Picking up new "supplies" due to all of YOU people!! ;)


While there I was able to catch the owner and a friend talking about a way to store sigars long term...with no humidor.

The gentleman basically stated he vaccum seals them in a box(box has to be sufficient strength to not buckle under the pressure) and they can pretty much stay indefinitely. He said with no oxygen molecules all the bad stuff can't happen. While I was there I was able to witness a box that was store by this method. The box was stored for two weeks in the hot warehouse directly against the metal wall(VERY HOT). They were protected from sun due to the box but the heat was reaching 95-100* each day. They stayed there for two weeks.

the owner opened the now pressurized box and grabbed one and fired it up. He and another customer could not believe they tasted exactly like the day they were stored. I was pretty amazed myself. He offered me one, I declined but thanked him.

Have you guys heard of anything like this before? I would never have believed it seeing there was no air, and moisture but who knows.


Also while there one of the friends had a box of 1930's pre ban cubans. My jaw dropped. I bet they smoke damn good. :smiley37:

I don't think I'd want to use that as a long-term storage technique.

I would think it would be about as effective as storing in tupperware.

In a vacuum, water and volatiles will evaporate very quickly. I can't see how this would work without drying the cigar out, although oxidizing would be prevented. Hermetically sealing them in an oxygen free neutral gas such as Carbon Dioxide at the proper humidity would probably work. CO2 is an excellent presevative.

I was thinking about sealing my sticks in glass tubes airtight and dropping them behind my dresser for 5 years :smiley4:

I would think something nice and inert, like nitrogen, would work better...

CO2 is neutral enough under these circumstances. The plus is that it's a nice big heavy molecule in comparison to other gases. It tends to settle out at the bottom of containers it's stored in, displacing other gases to the top. It's also very easy to contain because of this. It's also toxic in high concentrations to most life, including many that cause spoilage.

There's some serious thinking go on today. I might have to come back tonight.

My thoughts in the past have been that filling your coolerdor with CO2 might be a good way to kill beetle larva or prevent them from hatching. It should also inhibit mold growth.

Well this guy swears buy it and has stored several boxes long term. :smiley25: He says by taking the oxygen out it keeps them good.

I will try to talk to him more and gather more information. It wasa very brief talk.
