I'm looking into buying my first automobile, and I have a Pick-up truck, manual, 5 or 6 cylinders in mind. I'm not sure about a 2WD or a 4WD. Defiantly want an extended cab. I'm not sure what else I want beyond that. My choice of manufacturer's is Toyota, Ford, and Chevy/GMC. Does anyone have any input on this, either first hand or from a friend?
This is gonna be my next truck.... as soon as the lease is up on the one I have now.....

I had the Ram 1500 and traded that in for the Dakota.... both were Quad Cabs
I sat inside of the Mega Cab..... it is freakin HUGE.... definitley more comfortable than any other Quad cab or Ext cab......

If you're going to buy a truck, buy a diesel, otherwise you're wasting gas and money, not to mention a diesel will go 300,000 miles like it is warming up. Also, don't buy a (F)ound (O)n (R)oad (D)ead. If you buy a gas truck, go Chevy or Dodge, heck, even Toyota. If you buy a diesel go Chevy or Dodge, but not a dodge after this model year. My cousin is a big diesel wrench monkey and tells me they've had to screw with the cummins sooooo much to meet emission standards that it's ruined the dependability for all future Dodge diesels.
I agree about not buying a Ford. I have a friend in the service dept at a local for store and she says that they are seeing lots of the newer pickups come back in. The last pickup I owned was an '03 Chevy Silvarado with quadrasteer. The thing could do a U turn on a 2 lane street. I also think Chevy/GMC has the best ride out there in a 1/2 ton. I drive through Texas alot where they use pickups as work trucks and I see an awful lot of Chevy pickupsQuote:

I have owned 4 Fords, all w/ bad experiences. I have had my 2000 Silverado now for going on 7 years- no problems whatsoever. Had to replace the rear brakes once is all beyond regular oil changes etc.
If you go foreign, those Nissan Titans seem to be a nice ride. Great styling, good HP at 305, and a roomy cab. You cannot go wrong with a Toyota, but they are overpriced.
... and for my two bits... 4WD. More towing, more traction, more areas to explore... you can always take the 4WD off and run it on 2WD
If you're planning on owning/leasing for 2 to 5 years, it doesn't matter what Make you go with. Pick the one that you like best after test driving all of them.
I happen to have had great luck with Fords. I've owned 4 Ford trucks over the years, including a 1958, 1979 F-100, 1989 F-150 4wd Lariat, and a 2001 F-150 Crew, and have NEVER had a problem I couldn't fix in under 2 hours.
Basically research prices, test drive all possibles, and be prepared to walk away if they don't offer you a reasonable deal. There's always another dealer down the street that wants your business.
Toyota only. I have two. They may be "overpriced" but that is for a reason. It's because they are 10 times the truck of any other brand. I have 200000 miles on mine and it runs like a top! My friend has 250000 miles on his, and his runs better then mine. Toyota only:smiley20:
Wow, lots of good feed back! A lot of your comments I've heard before, so I'm feeling pretty good. I need to do a little more research on Chevy/GMC, Ford and Toyota and compair side by side. Also need to re-evaluate my budget. Well my plan was to go running at this park near by and then go check out some trucks, chevys actually, before USA's soccer game (there is no way i can call this football, sorry) In a twist of fate (pun intended), I twisted my ankle while running so I'm going to wait a day or two before test driving stick.

Toyotas are badass except for the price- especially those Land Cruisers from the late 70's/ early 80's. The trucks suck ass. I will race, pull or push in my Chev any day against Toy and win, win, win! Roham, bring that TOY down and watch it get swallowed.

Neutral thoughts would side with Dodge. They suck 20 times more then anything beforementioned!
If you can fork over the dough, go with Toyota. I've had a Chevy and a Dodge. I didn't have trouble out of any of them. The Chevy was too small and 2wd so I "upgraded" to a '02 Dodge Ram quad cab 4wd. That was nice but it had the 360 in it which really sucked down some gas. Now I have upgraded for the last time. I bought a '04 Tacoma Quad cab 2wd with the electric rear locking diff. It's the best of both worlds. I would take it just about anywhere I would have taken that Dodge. If you're planning on "fleecing" a vehicle it really doesn't matter what you get. You'll get screwed either way.

I really want one of the new Chevy trucks that are coming out next year. They're going to have a heater built right into the tailgate - so now your hands will stay warm when it breaks down in the winter and you have to push it home.

I'll say this one more time, get a diesel, it'll outlast anything else, but do it before the new EPA emission standards go into fully swing this fall and ruin all future diesel engines! Don't go Ford diesel though, only German or Dodge or Chevy. Dodge has the best diesel engine, Chevy has the best transmission (Allison). Better gas mileage and soon to be cheaper gas with biodiesel growing.
I drive a Chevy Colorado Z71 crew cab and I love it. Its a inline 5 with 220 HP and 225lbs of torque. I was going to get a Tahoe, but I dont need a Tahoe and with gas prices like they are, the inline 5 is awesome on gas.
The crew cab is pretty big for a "mid size" truck. My dad who is 6'3 230lbs fits comfortably back there. It can hall I think like 1400lbs and tow about 4000 if I remember correctly.
If your not looking for a huge truck and dont need to tow a huge boat or alot of stuff, the Colorado is it.
I looked at the Ranger yesterday and the pricing for both the Ranger and the Colorado are almost the same, for how I want them equipped. I’d be taking ownership in about 6 weeks so I don’t know what incentives are available then. So, now I need to find a good rate on a car loan. Any ideas? I heard Capital One has good rates, and I'm going to talk to my alumni credit union, my savings and checks banks.
Credit unions are the way to go.
