A discourse on the subject of the world's best "late great cigars" would have to include the Hoyo De Monterrey Seleccion Royale. This high- scoring series, introduced in 1998 and created by Estélo Padrón, was discontinued several years ago. We were lucky enough to score all of the remaining boxes.
Señor Padrón's concept was to faithfully recapture the wonderful flavor and aroma of the pre-embargo Cuban Hoyo De Monterrey blend. The cigars were handcrafted in both figurado and straight-sided parejo shapes using a savory blend of Honduran, Nicaraguan and Dominican long-filler tobaccos bound in a Connecticut Shade binder. The parejos were capped in dark, oily Maduro wrappers, while the figurados were rolled in Ecuadorian-grown Sumatra wrappers. The icing on the cake was the bands and boxes, which featured the original Cuban artwork. The Maduros quickly became a very hot item, and have completely sold-out.
What's left are three of the four original figurados, including the CONDESA, which you can pick-up today only for a song. Just $59.95 gets you 20 of these round-headed Pyramids that gracefully fan out to a 50 ring. The wrapper has a buttery appearance and texture like Cuban cigars, and the smoke is medium to full-bodied with a smooth, well-balanced flavor.
