Is a fan neccesary, or even helpful for that matter?

i've seen some humi's with little fans to circulate the air. does this really help anything? main thing i could think of is to keep air flowing and maybe eliminate mold? just guessing.

i did a search on here, not just real helpful. i know CC thinks it's stupid. :smiley36:
but would it help with humidity or mold or temp? i found one of those oust fans for like 2 bucks and figured it was worth a shot.

also, i was thinknig about installing a sprinkler system in my cooler in case of a fire? any suggestions? don't get excited ... i plan on using distilled water. geez, what do you guys take me for, some kinda newb?

I have heard that a fan can help distribute the humidity evenly and reduce mold. Though for most people I doubt that a fan would be a great help. If you have a large enclosed area then maybe it might help uniformily distribute the humidity (though it probably wouldn't be significant in a small humidor). You should be able to get enough flow of air just by opening up the humidor every once in a while if your not already to get your cigars. I don't think a fan would hurt though.

And instead of getting a sprinkler system why don't you just get the cigars insured for fire damage?

well you see if he gets the sticks insured for fire damage, every time he smokes one he'd be able to have insurance pay for it... sounds like a great deal to me.. :smiley2:

In a smaller humidor, not necessary. However, you might want to consider it for a coolidor (where there is a larger volume of air). Air circulation can be helpful, especially for mold issues I'm told.

I put an "Oust" fan in mine - you can pick them up for around $5 or so at the grocery store, and they come with a D sized battery. (Oust fans are in the air freshener section - just make sure to dispose of the air freshener cartridge before you use it). They turn themselves on and off automatically and accomplish the job...

As far as the "sprinkler" system - humidity is rarely an issue in a coolidor if it's properly sealed. You just stick a bag of beads, or (in my case) a block of floral foam soaked in distilled water. Use one of the disposable tupperware containers and cut holes in the lid (or wrap it in an old nylon stocking).

the sprinkler system was a joke. :smiley36:

I also put a couple of Oust fans in my cabinet at GG's suggestion a while back. They don't blow hard enough to cause drying out, but they do seem to help keep the humidity fairly constant throughout the humidor. It took me a while to figure out why they weren't running all the time, but they cycle 5 on - 15 off. Well worth the minimal cost if you have a larger humidor or coolidor.
