Intro & a couple of questions

Hello All,

The name here is Steve. I began smoking cigars this Summer. I have recently purchased a humidor that will hold ~75 cigars, and have an Oasis humidifier. My 2 favorites cigars so far (in order) are:

Carlos Toraño-Noventa 90 (the first cigar that I wished was longer)
Elogio Consul


There are others that I have enjoyed, but these stand out to me. So I have 2 questions: #1 Those of you who are familiar with the these smokes, what others do you think I should check out that would be similar in flavor profile?
#2 I am intrigued with aging cigars. The Torano is a pre-aged cigar (tobacco is aged 5 years). Will it continue to develop, or is the bulk of the aging payoff already accomplished? Is the answer generally applicable to other pre-aged cigars?

I haven't had either of those cigars, so I can't comment on them directly, but he best way to find more cigars you like is to try a lot. The newbie sampler (in the Exchange section) is great for that.


Other ways of finding cigars that are similair to the ones you like are looking for cigars from the same brand, place of origin, strength, or wrapper/filler type. Most of that information can be found from the maker's website, here for the torano.

Hope that helps a bit for one of your questions.

Welcome from the UK. Regarding the aging of cigars, even if the tobacco has been aged the cigar may improve with aging as it allows the oils and flavour of the individual tobaccos meld.

I haven't tried either of those smokes, but a great way to check out a lot of different cigars at a good price is the newbie sampler thread in the exchange section (I'm sure this has been mentioned). But anyway, half the fun of cigar smoking is trying all the different ones out there.

Welcome from Kansas. Can't go wrong with the CT line, imho, only one I don't personally enjoy is the 1959 silver. As for aging, stjohnroe hit it, aging will continue to change the flavor of the stick somewhat, but to what degree and for better/worse is something I am still experiementing with.

Can't say about #1, I haven't tried the noventa 90 yet.

#2- To be honest, most cigars are aged a few years, so IMHO 5 years isn't anything to really get excited about. The Rocky Patel Vintage are aged 10 and 12 years (and the 99 is aged 7 I think, but it's pretty mild) and they're fantastic smokes.

I think most people generally agree that letting a cigar sit can enhance the flavor and smoothness of cigar to an extent. I'm not sure what's considered too long but I'd guess that maybe 10 years aged is long enough :).

I think that you will find that only the wrapper has been aged 10 / 12 years for the RP vintage lines, with filler / binder being 7 years (http://www.rockypatel.com/products.html). So aging of the entire cigar will pay divdends in allowing the combination of tobaccos to mature and meld. :smiley23:

Welcome to the boards from NYC. I can recommend some cigars, try the punch champion, the gran habano #4 or 5, montecristo platinum, torano exodus 1956.

Aging is as others have said, you can age tobacco up to 50 years if stored properly, and this includes cigars.

As for a source for Toranos, don't listen to Mithril (sorry Chris, I love you bro), but the very owner of this cigar board sells them at his on-line cigar shop found at the top of every page, Camino Viejo Tabacos. Just click the link and you'll find great prices and selection.
