Newbie Question - Glycol smell

Hey people. I recently set up a mini humi in a large rectangular tupperware container. I'm using floral foam and 50/50 glycol solution.

I saturated the foam with glycol (inside a small plastic containter with holes). Then I put more distilled water on until the foam would absorb no more. There is no extra water anywhere. All is absorbed by the foam.

It's been holding a steady 70* like a champ for the past three weeks. The only thing is that when I lift the lid, i can smell a glycol smell. Its a bit funky. :smiley22: Did I use too much gylcol? I soaked it pretty good.

I'm not too sure about the glycol smell (although i've heard, and experienced, it slightly altering the flavor of the cigars) but you might want to just introduce yourself first and give some background as to who you are. Most guys are more wiling to help out when they know a bit about who you are. Enjoy your stay!

I think most people here are going to say ditch the foam. Get some 65 or 70% beads and just use distilled water. I used the glycol for a short time before I had my humidor but didnt like it. I felt like it left a thin slimy coat on my cigars.

It was almost a year before I finally got around to buying the beads everyone has mentioned. I used distilled water exclusively on the foam and it worked fine.

yeah just distilled water.

Beads are nice but I have started to keep a couple of these in my desk top.

65% and they work flawlessly.

I've moved my beads to the cooler with my jel jars.

For Tupperware, I'd toss in two. You can probably get them at your local B&M.

Also a lot of manufacturer's put these in their boxes (some are moving away from the added expense though) so if you go in and buy a bunch of sticks at your local and ask real nice they might throw in a couple.

Get rid of the solution.........too much makes the cigars gummy. Go Boveda packs, very easy to use.
