Natural Irish Hops
Just because I like the Kahlua by Drew Estates, I thought I'd give this (apparent) new smoke a try. So, last week I saw the "Natural Irish Hops" featured on CI and I ordered a fiver. It was $30 for five...not really a bargain or what I consider to be a special, but I figured it would be interesting.
So this is the cigar: 6x52 Irish Hops by Drew Estates.

Interesting....interesting....I just kept thinking that as I smoked this one.
At first, I figured this to be a stronger smoke than it actually turned out to be.
I removed the end cap...(first cigar I've ever seen with a paper cap on the end)... and I fired it up. Boy, I was not expecting such a sweet start. It was almost too sweet. I think that this was due in part, by the overlap of wrapper on the foot of the cigar. I just put the torch to it and started puffing. I think next time I will trim off the excess wrapper before lighting up.
So the first part of this stick, I found to be very mild. And did I say sweet?...Oh, yes. However, it was getting more like a cigar and less like candy as I got further along.
It burned evenly and effortlessly, although the mild nature of the smoke made me want to really draw faster than I would normally.
About half way through, I keep thinking that this would be great on one of those warm summer nights, sitting out on the back porch, with a glass of ice tea or perhaps a Baileys Irish Creme. So, maybe this first review isn't altogether a fair assessment since I am sitting out in my garage with 45 degree F temps.:smiley5:
So, OK, I've got 4 more and I think I'll just hang on to them until we get a good warm day around here. Then I'll give it another shot.
But for now, I think this one will get a 6 out of 10. (for me a 10 is an Ashton VSG)
I dock it 2 for the over-the-top initial sweetness. And minus 2 for the very mild smoke (I like a bit more pop).
It did finish better than it started, but I was getting chilly and put it out when I got down to the label.
If any of you folks have tried this one, please chime in. I certainly do not claim any expertise, but I do like to try different types of smokes, and this one was certainly different.
