Hip Replacement Surgery
I found out yesterday that my mom needs hip replacement surgery. I don't know the why/when/how's of it and I don't know much about the actual surgery and out patient treatment other then it is pretty invasive but a fairly common surgery. I’m a little nervous due to the fact the she lives on her own and has two small dogs which need to be walked and fed. I was wondering if any one here has any info they could PM me with. Thanks.

My Mom has undergone that very procedure. Although I still don't have all the details, She claims it to be a lifesaver. She says the initial "discomfort" (read: Pain), is far out weighed by the increased mobility, and lack of daily aches and pains.
She will definately need someone to help around the house/walk the dogs. My Mom is on the other side of the country, but I'll see if I can get more details of the healing time, etc...
It is a very common procedure, so try not to worry too much.

I have a friend who is an ortho surgeon who does hip and knee replacements. He is also a researcher and peer educator. The technology is not only vastly improved from even only 10 years ago, but continues to get better. Check out your docs, make your best choice, and she'll have a better life for it. Good luck to her!

My mother-in-law had it done and she had the same experience. The recovery pain and PT was more than worth it once it was all done and said. The daily pain and discomfort of the failed hip was far worse. Also, all the related problems, knee pain, back pain, the limping and other effects on her walking all went away. She had this done a couple of years ago and gets around now better than she had for years. She is a big fan of the procedure.
