I was wondering if anyone had a memorable violent scene from a movie. I'm not talking so much blood and gore from a horror flick, as an action - fighting kind of scene.
I'm thinking of:
James Gandolfini and Patricia Arquette in True Romance
Charlton Heston's chariot race scene in Ben-Hur
Russel Crowe vs. the centurions and tigers in Gladiator
Well, that should be good to get started.
Al Pacino's final shootout in Scarface
The lobby shootout from The Matrix (though that's pretty stylized)
Many scenes from Flags of our Fathers (especially the "Bonzai" cave scene...you know what I'm talking about)
Mel Gibson going apeshit with his tomahawk in The Patriot
Just a few that come to mind.
Mr. Blonde (Michael Madsen). cutting off the cops ear and dowsing him in gasoline in Reservoir Dogs.
Does anime count? The original animated release of "Fist of the North Star" was crazy. When certain "masters" would hit people their bodies or body parts would sell up until they exploded with blood and gore everywhere. No the most fluid movie but pretty cool on the violent meter. IMO.
My first thought was the opening scene of Saving Private Ryan.
the second scene in the new 007 movie when they are jumping and swinging from everything in site.

I am with you on this one Ash…One of my all time favorite movies too. But the craziest thing about this scene is that you don’t even get to see the ear actually being cut off…The camera pans away and lets you think of what it may have been like to see it.:smiley26: All we get to see is the aftermath.:smiley11: But this scene gets my vote as most violent scene. To me, the most horrifying scene yet is at the end of Saving Private Ryan. When the Jewish American soldier is struggling with a Nazi soldier, and the Nazi overpowers him, as he pleads for his life. The Nazi slowly but surely pushes a dagger into his heart, looking him right in the eyes muttering something as he kills him. I can hardly watch that scene again, the sheer inhumanity of such cold-blooded gleeful killing really makes me sick.

The first one I thought of was a little more light-hearted than the war movies, but I've got to go with the scene where The Bride chops up the Crazy 88's gang in Kill Bill.
Actually, now that I think about it, pretty much every fight scene in the Kill Bill movies is over-the-top violent (the massacre at the church, the fight in the trailer house, putting and end to Buck, etc.) but instead of disgusting or horrifying me, they just crack me up.
There has been lots of violence pointed out in the movies above, and on purpose I didn't include anything from the Lord of the Rings (even though there was a time when I knew exactly which scenes to skip to on the DVD's to just watch the fight scenes), or anything from Pulp Fiction. I actually laughed the first time I saw John Travolta "accidentally" shoot Marvin's head off in the back of the car. It wasn't that violence or any action fighting was absent from these movies, but the action was used for action and humor, respectively; not the emotion we are targeting in this thread.
Other movies I am nominating for intense violence: Rocky 3, where the boxing scenes with Mr. T make me cringe, and a Christian Bale movie called Equillibrium, very Matrix-like, but years earlier. Oh, also the last fight in Blade. Yikes. The last two movies are just kind of so overly choreographed, it kind of loses it's effect.
The final church scene in the Killer (John Woo, Chow Yun Fat), absolutely classic GunFu.
Most of the battle scenes in Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World, are very violent, and portrayed in a way that is very intense.
Tall ships and naval battles have always held a fascination to me. what a Brutal life, to serve on a vessel like that
The Lord of the Rings movies are among my all time favorites, but the battles have more of a fantasy feel to them, so they seem less violent to me.
There are many great scenes, but the most recent one I've seen was in another Christian Bale movie called Harsh Times, he and his buddy are sitting at a table trying to sell a gun to some Mexican pimp in a creepy Mexican dive, when all of the sudden another dude comes out of nowhere and just gashes the pimp's neck wide open at which point he slumps to ground and is laying there while his remaining blood pumps onto the floor.

I think there is more shotting in the opening scene then most war movies!
Christian Bale has certainly attracted the violent movies, huh? I still have trouble listening to Huey Lewis and the News........
The opening scene of Nightcrawler attacking the White House and almost getting the President in XMEN 2 was pretty cool.

Christian Bale is great as the new Batman. And I loved him in The Prestige. And I thought Equilibrium was good as well. American Psycho kind of disturbed me, but it had some great lines.

Thus, that's why I said the scene in Saving Private Ryan was the most violent. The death scene is not sanitized, and the horrific reality is right in your face; the Nazi soldier is taking great, personal pleasure in slowly inserting the knife into his heart, and you see the blood, you see the horrified desperate look on his face as the knife goes in. And you can almost feel the knife go in; you can perceive the essence of a dying man, and the hatred and glee that the Nazi feels as he snuffs out his life.
To me, that is more horrifying and violent than all the car chases, explosions, and Hollywoodish machine-gunning of foes tthat I have ever seen.

There are some scenes with almost a comical display of horror/violence. That wasn't what was so much intended in this thread. I found it personally uncomfortable to watch Rocky III. Unfortunately, for me, kung-fu movies don't do much for me in the way of terror or violence. While I realize it's all Hollywood behind these movie scenes, it's like comparing backyard wrestling with WWF wrestling.
Possibly for another thread, would be sadistic bad guys. For that, I would vote Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List, as the Nazi officer who stands on his roof picking off the working Jewish population below, Peter Stormare in almost everything he's been in, or Jason Issacs in The Patriot.
Saving Private Ryan is VERY uncomfortable for me to watch. Probably the most disturbing scene is when the car pulls up to the farmhouse. That whole scene gets to me every time I watch it... no dialog was necessary.
Yep, the whole movie is painful to watch because the violence is portrayed very realistically. I enjoy watching it, but I cringe at several points in the movie every time I watch, even though I have seen if over a half-dozen times by now.Quote:

I find that movie really moving and hard to watch but watch it quite often, lest we forget. Once I asked a German speaker what that soldier was whispering into Mellish's (?) ear as he killed him and he said 'for you it is easy' or some such sympathetic thing.
