H. Upmann disappointing

I had a buddy pass to me an H. Upmann tubo lonsdale. The label said nothing but 1844. I tried it yesterday with high expectations and I was sorely disappointed. Nothing special at all. The first thing I noticed was that the cigar was a little light for it's size, and seemed rolled a little loose. I thought maybe being a tubo, it was a bit dry? It didn't feel dry though. The cigar had a good feel to it and the wrapper didn't flake. At any rate, this cigar was no better than any other medium bodied Nicaraguan economy smoke I've had (Don Kiki Red Label comes to mind). Not terrible by any means, but nothing special either. I had thought H. Upmann to be a premium brand, and a tubo to be a better quality smoke. :smiley21:

i agree i have been very disapponted with the H.upmann line of smokes.

But on the cuban side of things.. they are my favorite go to smoke's!
strating with the magnum 46 and the conni #1

H. Upmann is a fine name as far as a CUBAN cigar but it has absolutely, positively NOTHING to do with the garbage they produce under that name in Honduras.

The ONLY thing non-Cuban cigars have in common with Cuban cigars of the same name is the NAME ONLY. Different companies, different tobacco, different countries, NOTHING and I repeat NOTHING in common with one another AT ALL, NADA ZIP, NOTHING.

I've never been one to venture the morning smoke, but I bought a box of Upman Cristales and they're certainly not a medium-full bodied cigar, but they have nice construction and an even burn. Their flavor isn't the most complex, but I'm sure it'd make somebody a nice morning newspaper cigar, after all, the lonsdale length is good for about 1.5 hours and you could easily take that long on a newspaper. I bought the box in the winter for around 38 dollars, so I didn't feel cheated. So, if anybody wants a morning cigar, I think I have a few more of these lying around.

P.S. They are better with age, that is for sure.

I got one from a pass and was looking forward to smoking it. It wasn't what I expected. I wouldn't be running out to buy a box. Am I willing to try others in the line sure just not willing to pay $4.50 for another one of those.

I agree that the H Upmann was not that great. I may be a newbie but it had a poor draw. I've smoked a cheaper padron and was much more happier. Perhaps I will give them another chance. But for now. to H. Upmann :smiley21:

I agree it was nothing special but I would not go so far as saying it was terrible. It had a good but not wonderful prelight aroma. Good draw and firm ash. Flavor was a bit one dimensional and mild to medium in strength. If it was cheap I would buy some for everyday stuff and giving to friends on poker night. If asked for a rating number I would say 83.

i have a H. Upmann vintage cameroon and not sure what the other is, just has the 1844 on it. Havn't tried either kind, they better be good :smiley7:

I'm fairly new to cigars. I've only smoked a few dozen over the past couple of years. Having said that, I tend to not care much for any cigar with a natural colored Connecticut wrapper. I find them to taste like chemicals or fresh parsley.

My first couple of Upmann Robustos weren't that impressive. I bought a 5 pack and smoked a couple. I let the other ones age a bit. After aging for a few months, I noticed a considerable change in the harshness of the cigar. It did not have nearly the same flavor as the other Connecticut wrapped cigars.

I guess I might have to just let them age a bit.

No, I'm saying that non-Cuban cigars using Cuban names "suck" you said that, I didn't.

that non-Cuban cigars using Cuban names like "Cuban so-and-so" suck or that a Cuban brand's Dominican or Honduran counterpart brand sucks, e.g. RyJ Habana vs RyJ Dominican, etc.

I wish you'd be more detailed in your explanations as this is getting to be very confusing.

Well, one things for sure, the domestic one I had wasn't all that great. I've also found out that I seem to be sorely mistaken about tubos being a sign of quality. Many gas station cigars now appear to come in glass tubes. :smiley11:

I just tried another one of these. I recieved it from a friend. He loves them. It had about a 50 ring gauge, so it was a bit bigger than the last tubo I had, which was about 44. This one looked, felt, smelled and tasted much better than the other one. I wouldn't call it a great smoke or a real complex flavor, but it was nice. It's about how jaewing descibes his here.

Yeah, I was dissapointed tith the H. Upmanns. I had a Corona Majors and geez it was a hard draw, harsh, and not all that great. It kept going out too. Lasted near 2.5 hours in between me getting the shits and relighting it so many times....

Non Cuban Upmanns used to be a great line of cigars when they only used Cameroon wrappers. Some time during the boom, they switched to Indonesian wrappers and ruined their entire line of cigars. Back in the mid 80's the Upmann cigars were some of the best on the market.

The Cuban Upmanns are one of Cubas best lines. They are very consistent throughout the line and use very high quality tobacco.

I've had similar experiences with the H. Upmann N/C line. They do have a Cameroon line. Harris, are those like the old ones??? I've not been tempted to try them, but if what you say is true....

BTW - my FAV Cameroon wrapped cigar is the Cuesta Rey Stanford's Cameroon Reserve... Friggen Godfather and CigarSarge got me hooked on those...

Smoked an H. Upmann a couple days back. This was an ISOM Corona- tubo. I enjoyed it very, very much. We went to Cancun in late October for what was supposed to be a five day trip. Ended up being stuck in Hurricane Wilma. We were evacuated from our luxury hotel to a very ghetto school downtown without electricity, running water or anything else we take for granted here for 6 awful days. By the time we got home, it ended up being a 14-day adventure. The beauty of it all is that I was able to sneak some Upmanns, Punch and Cohibas through customs without any problem. I think they felt sorry for the hell we had to endeavor or something because they practically pretended not to see anything. On one occassion, right after the hurricane ended, there were a few local looters lined up outside of our shelter. I had the opportunity to buy a 10- box of large Cohibas for $2.00 American or 20 Pesos. My better half encouraged me not to contribute to their cause and I still regret not making that deal to this day.

Back on subject: Cuban Upmanns are extremely good. Non ISOM versions are extremely average.:smiley41:

ggeise, the Upmann Vintage Cameroons that are out right now are a pretty good smoke if you can get them at the right price. I paid 75 bucks for the Lonsdales in the glass jar.

I got another one in a freebie sampler. Upon close inspection, the wrapper on this one looks good too. Nice and toothy. The first one I had didn't have any tooth at all. It was papery and veiny. From my experience so far, a nice toothy wrapper generally bodes well for the cigar. Some Padron Maduros I enjoyed had a very toothy wrapper. Anyhow, if this one turns out decent, I'm going to chalk up the 1st one as just a single bad cigar.

They are the bomb, especially the Mag 46 and Sir Winston.

i too was dissapointed by my H. Upmann, it was the Monarch tubo. i decided to give the brand another chance with a little $1.50 Demi Tasse 33x4.5. It really succeeded my expectations. I was overall very pleased with the demi, a very good, short smoke.

exceeded them. after the other H.U. though, that wasnt hard to do. The demi was definitely a very good smoke. the draw was a little on the tough side, but the flavor made up for it.
