Okay...I got a question. What do you do when you simply don't like a cigar? I bought a Fonseca today and smoked it tonight, and it just wasn't my bag. But I finished smoking it because I didn't want to waste it. Is this the right thing to do, or should I have just set it down?
That's preference. I toss them, but I have others to go to. If I only had what I was smoking, I'd make the call on the spot.
I would probably keep smoking-I haven't tried any cigar that I absolutely couldn't finish.
I have read a lot of posts since Oct, so my opinion only comes from what I have read. As long as the cigar wasn't making you physical ill it appears that finishing the cigar in its entirety is in your best interest. The same cigar out of the same box might not have a same taste. In addition, a cigar might start off tasting one way and by the end of the smoke might have a different taste. From what I have read, the way a cigar is stored and wrapped may be the two biggest influences on why the same cigar may taste differently. So to make sure you really don't like it you might do well to finish the smoke. :smiley14:
The normal rule I smoke by is I try and finish at least 3/4 of the smoke. Sometimes, you'll start a smoke that starts horrible however about 1/2 or 3/4 will get nice if not wonderful. This doesn't happen all the time. However, it's nice when it does.
If it ain't good I toss it. Life is too good to smoke bad tobacco. :smiley37:

i'd have to say i'm kind of a snob on this. if the smoke isn't good, i won't finnish it. if its plugged i'll try to save it but if it is not saveable, i toss it. its no fun to have to work to smoke something.
If I'm not enjoying one, I'll toss it and start again. If it's a small cigar, I'll usually give it until the half way point or so to see if it changes, if it's a large cigar, I'll just get rid of it after a little bit if it hasn't improved. An exception to this would be cigars that are rolled a bit tight or are slightly plugged but that I think could be good. Those, I will keep smoking and working on because I've found that, with a little patience, I can usually open them up and enjoy them. However, if they're not smokeable, then they're not smokeable and out they go.
I've tossed a Pinar 2000, one lumberg mailed out in the taste thing, and a Diablo. The rest I can't remeber, but those were the worst!!! :smiley11:
what was it that you didn't like about the fonseca??.....it really is one of the best dominican brands.....you may want to try the fonseca vintage or the vegas de fonseca,which is a nicely priced,cammy wrapped cigar...or,the fonseca sun-grown cedars.....
I've actually had cigars that I couldn't stand the frist 1/3, which turned into one of the best cigars I've ever smoked after finishing it (LFDM Chisel). I was VERY tempted to toss it close to the beginning, but held in there (it was VERY spicy at first). Now I know what to expect with that cigar... (It is a POWERFUL smoke!!!)
I'd suggest you tough it out to the end - then make your mind up about the cigar - unless it's so obnoxious you can't take it. And I'd try the cigar a second time if it wasn't REAL bad, just to make sure you didn't get one bad one out of the bunch (it happens from time to time).
If the cigar flavor wise is not good at the start I will usually keep smoking it, I will just not nub it. But I have had a few cigars that just didn't produce enough smoke for me and I threw it out. I just don't like working real hard to smoke my cigar. If it is plugged or just doesn't produce smoke I toss.:smiley1:

What did I like? I don't really know how to talk about cigars, and I don't really know how to describe it. About the best I can do is that it tasted...tangy? I think that would describe it best. The one I had anyway. I may give them another chance, but probably not.
i'm actually more interested in some of the shit from your blog.....some of it is pretty amazing...

You didn't like the Diablo? That's a shame. They're nice looking cigars. I find them quite tasty. Very similar to Onyx and Nestor Reserve's in flavor.Quote:

Posting my blog was obviously a bad decision on my part, and for that I apologize. I'm not out to offend anyone. I'm sorry some of you feel as if you were tricked into reading something you didn't like by mistaking it for cigar related. I put my blog url on my signature of all the forums I post in, incase someone might read it and like what I have to say, and continue to read it.
As I have stated before though, I wasn't the one to bring it up, so I see none of this as my fault. Not once did I ask for any comments on it to be posted on this board. This, however, is a very trivial thing, in my opinion, but I just wanted to clarify my position.
I will not apologize for my writing. It almost seems to me that is what you really want me to apologize for. If I am mistaken on this, then so be it.
Simply put, I’m just here for the cigars. It seems there is a lot of knowledge floating around this board, and I hope to learn all I can. I hope this can be the end of this matter.

While this board is owned and operated by one man, it is a community of individuals who collectively create the environment. We respect the rules Hex as laid down - but he has also left a lot of leeway for us to flourish. And he has left us a lot of lattitude to discuss amongst ourselves the communities mores. You've tread into an area which is outside the norms of the board - and you should be VERY careful walking on that path... Make some choices here, Dave - is this REALLY where you want to be (that path clearly leads out the door) - or would you prefer to stay in the mainstream of this community.

I read it, found some of it to be entertaining. Nothing offensive to me (but thats not saying much). I think some people here just get bent out of shape too easy, just brush it off and keep on going with your life.

Dave, it was a mistake to post it in your sigtag. You did right to take it down. IMHO it's alright to have it in your profile as that is your "personal information".
Don't be overly sensitive about the criticism you have received. While you enjoy your writing, others will have their opinions about it and as long as you have links to it anywhere here or elsewhere that gives others the right to voice those opinions.
*Note: I know we are all fed up with the influx of asshats on the boards lately, so it's possible we all might be a little on edge. Just an observation.
It's a question of degree with me, but generally I will give it the benefit of the doubt and see if it gets better. I did once chuck a Private Stock after half an inch though, horrible :smiley11: :smiley11:
