What do I do? TNT sent me the wrong (but more valuable) box

Okay, trying to decide what to do about a shipment I got today from TNT. I had ordered a box of Puros Indios Maxima toros which were on closeout for $49.95 plus free shipping (TNT lists the retail for the box at $130). I'd had one and really wanted to sample more.

Greedily tore open the package today and had to stop. It wasn't a box of Puros Indios Maxima, it was a box of Padron 4000 Maduro (retail on TNT is $153.00). Now, I know most people would say "A box of Padron for 50 bucks? You'd be crazy not to keep that!" And I kind of agree. But here's the thing - I still want to try those Puros Indios Maximas and, due to an unspoken agreement with my wife, my cigar budget is blown for awhile.

Step into my shoes. What do you do? I assume if I call TNT, they'll replace the shipment and have me send the Padrons back on a prepaid label. I'll get what I ordered at the price I paid (will have to wait a little longer, but ...). If I say nothing, I get a total STEAL of a deal on the Padron 4000 maduros (which I've never had).

It isn't stealing when they send you the wrong package. But the fact that YOU think it is and is asking for moral justifications, that's just wrong.

That is indeed a moral dilemma. A sucky one to decide on too.

I would have to tell them...who knows..maybe they will just say keep them? lol

Is this a moral or ethical question? I think you're the only one who can answer that. If it was a closeout they may have exhausted their stock and sent a "comparable" box. You can call if you like, but I would look in the fine print and see if they reserve the right to substitute. The 4000 is a very nice stick, but if you don't want them, return them.

What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas ! Also note the other saying..What goes around comes around ! Your choice

Send the Padrons back and get your original order.
Request a single Padron 4000 from TNT, which you've never had, for the inconvenience.
They should make it right.

I'm not asking for moral justifications or rationalizations. I have no qualms about clamming up and I'm not asking for you to tell me it's okay (because franky, I don't care too much whether you think it's okay). I'm asking for opinions on what people would do in such a situation - keep the bonus box or return it for the less valuable one they really wanted in the first place.

I also would like to point out I do not think Alan was giving you a lecture. What I do think is they ran out of what you ask for like Shelby suggested and substituted the higher end box for your troubles.

No shit. If a vendor fucks up in his favor, I am sure as hell going to let him know. Same thing as if he fucks up in my favor. At least try to make things right, and not profit off other people's mistakes.

So what would you do if they sent you a box that was worth only 20 bucks less than the one you ordered? It's a 2 way street. Odds are, somebody else who ordered the Padrons got your order.

If you don't want to hear our opinions why did you post asking for them?

IMO you are a scumbag for taking advantage of a vendor like this.

I would call them and let them know what the problem was. If they make it right by letting you keep the Padrons or by shipping out what you paid for along with something for your trouble, then your problem is solved. If they ask for the Padrons back without any comps on their part, I would not do business with them anymore.

aceswired, The only thing you don't care for are people telling you you're in the wrong.

I would've either kept the box and live with it, or tell the merchant and work something out. I'll not go public and ask for support from people. You're in denial if you think you haven't made up your mind long before you posted this topic.

Yes, I can see that. And I've thought about it. My initial reaction was to return the cigars. But there are a few differences between the two scenarios that I see.

1) If they send me a box that is worth $20 less, that remains their mistake. This is not my mistake. Having quality control in a warehouse is a big part of any business - I know. If you don't pay for that quality control, you end up paying in other ways. This is true of any business.

2) The cost of shipping one box back to them, and them shipping the other box to me would just about be the difference in the valuation of the two boxes (again, assuming we're going by retail price and assuming that their retail price is proportional in how much they paid for the cigars).

I realize you may not agree with my reasoning here, and that's okay. I don't mind people disagreeing with me here. What I do mind is people making sweeping judgements and bringing out the namecalling. It's uncalled for.

Retail is a reflection of how much TNT owns the box for. Assuming the markup is roughly the same, we can assume their price for the box was roughly proportional.

Wow, you dug up an old post. However, if you knew what you were talking about, we called famous, and offered to pay the difference. They however are an upstanding vendor, said that it was their mistake, and said that they would honor the price.

You're right about that. This is my final post here. I read a few cigar boards, and this is by far the most intolerant. I've met quite a few great people here and will stay in touch with a few. But there's a rather rabid gang of "old-timers" who are so big on themselves that they just drive away a lot of good folks. It is, no doubt, one of the big reasons the membership here is smaller than a lot of the cigar boards.

Thanks to those who have talked cigars with me over the past month or two. Was a pleasure. Unfortunatly, I'm just a bad seed who doesn't fit in with the more angelic elements here. There are other boards, and this one just ain't worth it.

Funny part is, I knew it early on, watching the piling on that was going on in several threads (that had nothing to do with me). Personally, I find that to be a coward's mentality, but to each his own.
