I second bigwhiteash's comments about the MX2. While it's a nice cigar, I don't know if it's one of those to try out first.
I also highly recommend the Newbie Sampler Thread III. Look for it in the Exchange part of the forum.
I have just started smoking cigars since about Thanksgiving, and while I haven't smoked many, I keep a little journal with the wrappers of each new smoke, just pointing out what I like, and what I don't like about each smoke. I was kind of confused about what the deal was until I smoked a Padron 4000. Now I'm hooked. Inevitably, there will be some that are more pleasing to your palate than others. And don't be upset if a cigar you had high hopes for turns out to be bad. You don't have to spend a lot on a cigar for it to be better, either. Basically, as in cigarnobaka's tag, there really are only two types of cigars: the ones you like, and the ones you don't.
