    Default hello

Hey everyone. My name is Rich. I live on Long Island, NY. I'm a graphic designer working a magazine publisher in NYC at the moment.

So. Cigars, yeah. I puffed a few cigars when I was a teenager but didn't really get into it. But this past February I was in Mexico on vacation and smoked some Cohiba Pequenos, which I enjoyed immensely. I also figured since I was out of the States, why not grab a Cuban. Whether or not it was actually Cuban tobacco I couldn't tell, but it was damned tasty(it was hand rolled right in front of me in the hotel). After returning home I started picking up a cigar here and there when I felt the urge. Now I'm smoking 3 over the weekends. They seem to really be great following a steak with a Captain and Coke.

I've been smoking the Cohibas and Ashton mild coronas(a suggestion from my local tobacco dealer). I'm getting more and more into cigars every time I smoke one. Now, I'd like to expand my stogie horizon and try some new things, but walking into a humidor is very intimidating to me still. I found these boards while doing some research and decided why not read what the experienced smokers smoke. I've been reading through the threads for about a week now and decided to join up and say hello and thanks for the info I've found so far.

Looking forward to learn more about cigars from you all.

Welcome, Rich. I'm relatively new here myself. I have found the people on this forum to be very helpful to cigar newbies. If you need to know anything about cigars, this is the place!

Welcome from Kansas. Try out the newbie sampler thread in the exchange section.....a great way to experience a wide variety of smokes at a much more reasonable price than picking up singles at the b/m.

    Welcome.

Just to clear a couple of things up, first as an American it is illegal for you to purchase and Cuban products anywhere in the world due to the embargo your country has placed on them. Secondly I wouldn't worry about the "Cuban cigar" that was rolled in front of your hotel in Mexico, most of the places that roll cigars in front of you are not using Cuban tobacco and that goes for the ones in Cuba as well (unless you're in a government shop or an actual factory there).

Now, get yourself over to the Newbie Sampler Thread in the Exchange portion of the board and get yourself hooked up with a nice selection.

Thanks for the welcome everyone. I'll defiantly check out the newbie exchange thread.

I tried an Ashton maduro last night as well. it was pretty good, but i think I may have cut it wrong. the tip was pretty stiff and I had to lightly chew it to soften it up to get a good draw. I'm just using a standard free plastic cutter from the tobacco shop.

Quite right, Corvin. I didn't know that a few years ago when I visited Europe. Picked up a small cuban cigar in Saltzburg and smoked it in the town square of Florence, with a big smile on my face. Thought I was legal!

You'll do well to invest in something descent to cut your stogies with. Most of the guys at my local B&M use a cigar punch cutter, although traditional Xikars are popular as well. When using a punch, I get the best results after dampening the cap with moisture from my mouth. I (think I) don't run the risk of splitting the cap.

If I have the time, I personally use a very sharp pocketknife.
