    Default New Metallica

I obtained a pre-release copy of the new Metallica CD last night (Don't tell Lars). Let me say that this album completely exceeded my expectations. I fell out of love with this band (like many others) when they released the "Black Album". I understand that they could not go on playing the same stuff and had to grow/diversify but it was just not for me. This album beats the shit out of St. Anger and really marks a return to the grittier Metal up your Ass style. Rick Rubin told them what to do and what not to do and the boys must have listened. There are a couple of short lived sappy moments on the album and I would not put it up there with the first 4 releases (original Garage Days... included) but it is great overall. The most comparitive release I would use is Justice for All. It has that feel to me. Anyhoo, def. worth a listen.

Good to know the radio song isn't the best of the bunch. I'm not happy with that particular track. At least lars has slightly improved his drum tones, I couldn't stand them on St Anger, soundid like he was playing drums on old playground balls

Interestingly enough, I bought the St. Anger cd with the DVD of rehearsals, and the DVD really rocks.

I'm a HUGE fan of old school Metallica, even the black album has its moments, but after that.....SUCK!

I absolutely can't stand Metallica. At practice I'll turn my snares off so it sounds like I'm hitting an empty keg and play one of Lars' drum beats that any beginner could play.

    Lars sucks.

    Metallica sucks.

    I'm a music snob. "YEAH!!!"

I'm with Chris - the best thing I like about metallica is switching channels when it comes on the radio.

i personally was really turned off to st anger. I love virtually everything else of theirs. From what i've heard, this album should bring the good Metallica back.

I used to be a Metallica fan, and will admit i did like the King nothing track off of st. anger, but i just find them a little slow now. They were good when i was a kid, and introduced me to metal but i have out grown them. Even there old stuff is too slow. I'll give this album a listen though, maybe i'll like it.

There's nothing slow about their new track "All Nightmare Long" (the only track I've had time to listen to). My hopes are a bit renewed so far

I really liked the old stuff, but then the Black album came, the MI:2 video, and the whole Napster thing, I drifted away. I used to have the original Garage Days on cassette, and would just listen to it over and over and over and over. It's been lost for years now. Can't find it anywhere.

I don't know. I'll give it a listen. But I'm going into it a skeptic.

Metallica had one good album - Kill 'em All, and Dave Mustaine wrote most of it. Its all downhill from there. Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets are arguable, but even those songs are pointless (wtf is "battery?"), and without Burton they are nothing.

I'm sorry, but with the likes of Sepultura, Slayer, and Pantera, there is no need to listen to Metallica.

I will say they were smart getting Rick Rubin in on the deal, he's produced a shitload of big acts, including Slayer. But still, I haven't bought a CD since '02, and the next one sure as fuck isn't going to be a Metallica album.
    End of line.

Don't take it as I am plugging the band- just the new album. It is a step in a good direction. As for the band, they would probably not break my favorite 300 artist list. Hetfield and Ulrich can go f- themselves. However, it is great to hear Mr. Hammett playing solos again. I was worried the dude came down with arthritis or something after listening to the last couple of albums. I love Robert Trujillo as a bassist and musician in general. He was putting out great music that buried Metallica before joining the band such as Suicidal Tendencies.

I am with you Ted. Any Metallica I have heard on the radio automatically gets switched. I would rather listen to Manudo than to hear Enter Sandman again.

I am a music snob too. That's why I cannot stand played out poser bands like 1817. You may not like Metallica's music, but you should listen more closely to your own band before dissing the talent level of musicians far superior to yours.

I'm certainly not saying they're at the top of my list, but if you play Orion, or Call of Ktulu... I'm immediately rocking out!

Metallica, whether you like them or not, was a VERY powerful force with their early albums, well written, expertly produced, and able to back that up with sold out world tours.

I don't want to start an argument, since musical tastes are as diverse as cigar preferences. But anybody who says they "suck" is just plain LOST!

ok - one of my favs right now I can only find on youtube - other versions of both songs by various artists are out there on CD, but this is the shit: Twilight Singers with Mark Lanagan doing a "Live with Me / Where did You Sleep Last Night" medley. fuckin' sick. Also, Lanegan with Soulsavers on "Revival". Also been listening to some Nick Cave - this guy is a genius.

Wait a minute, when did Slayer become a big act?

Rubin also produced Cash's American Recordings, Tom Petty's Wildflowers, and a shitload of other big names (RHCP. Weezer, U2, SOAD, Beastie Boys, Run DMC)

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds are flipping awesome. Basil, you should check out
    Grinderman, another Nick Cave project.

As far as Metallica, I've loved them since 5th grade when my older cousin made me a copy of Master. Even liked the black album...then they cut their hair and it was like they lost their powers.
St. Anger had potential but was IMO, one of the most poorly produced albums I've heard. The dvd does sound way better.
They may be HUGE assholes (James and Lars) but Kirk is a guitar god and James was right about Trujillo, ST rocks.
Did anyone see the Some Kind of Monster doc? I lost all respect for Lars and James as human beings, but I'll still listen to their old stuff and throw up the horns.

Nick Cave. Awesome! Just listening to some old NC and the Bad Seeds last week. You cannot deny the power of a song like "The Mercy Seat".

I guess if you like to hear grating horror movie music with the chorus sung over, and over, and over........

I can't stand that guy. He may write some interesting lyrics, but he can't sing his way out of a paper bag, and there is zero musical talent behind him.
