Whoops! Can't say how little I agree with this statement. You won't find a Yngwie or a black metal drummer in this band, but you won't find anyone there who's interested much in that genre either - at least not in playing it.

Bad Seeds have a visceral connection though that can only be had through musicianship and years of playing together. Take a look at their Stagger Lee vid on youtube (be sure your sexual ID is pretty firmly intact), and you'll see a band that plays in another time - that of their own making.

Others - "Into My Arms", or "Henry Lee" with PJ Harvey, or "15 Feet of Pure White Snow".

Hey I know he's not for everybody - he's never been on mainstream radio - but these guys really come from somewhere else.

Yeah, I don't mean to ruffle any feathers, I guess his work is just not my taste. I consider myself to have a fairly broad musical preference, but most of what I've heard from them grinds on my nerves like nails on a chalkboard. After reading this thread last night, I went out and found a few albums, including the self titled Grinderman. Yes, I sat through the entire albums, there were a few ok pieces, but not many that I'll need to hear again.

Like I said... not for me

[QUOTE=heftysmokes;115732]Wait a minute, when did Slayer become a big act?

Hey, they've been around longer than Metallica dude. Rick Rubin also kicks ass because he keeps crates of porn in his house. Didn't he used to pretty much run Def Jam?
    End of line.

Don't get me wrong, I totally think getting Rick Rubin was a huge score. He and Russell Simmons built Def Jam from scratch.

And Metalllica and Slayer both formed in 81, at least that's what Wikipedia tells me.

One of the metal acts I really like is White Zombie. I can't say I can really stomach any of their movies, but I do enjoy the music. Wikipedia told me they were planning a reunion, sans Rob. I can't see that being very productive. Besides Powerman 5000, is there anything out there like them?

    Thanks

I've been listening to this for 3 days now, I really like it! I'm sure Rubin sat down with them and said OK... What made your early albums work? Lets incorporate that into this new album. Intense powerful rhythm riffs, long songs, blistering solos, (though nothing like say Fade to Black), and a 10 minute instrumental. Not as refined SOUNDING as Master' or 'Justice', but back to the kick in the nuts live jam session style!

I admit, I was VERY skeptical when I saw a song titled "Unforgiven III", but it's actually a totally different chord progression on this one. pretty good songwriting.

I'm telling you, go back and listen to Kill Em All and you will realize how bad the rest of their stuff sucks.

Dude... I listen to Kill Em All quite often, and it has never made me realize that anything before the black album "sucks". The album is good, but it isn't all that! Ride the Lightning through And Justice for All... how can you say those albums suck?

The same way that some people say that Opus X sucks.........its all about personal tastes bro.

Bob Marley is where its at anyway............and what he smoked at least looked like a cigar.

OK, I should kind of clarify, and this is a position I've held on Metallica for years. Take a look at all of their albums - each one is a lot better than the one after it. This is consistent throughout their discography, and after 6 albums you end up with (blechh) Load.

I know a lot of people do, but I don't put Justice on any sort of pedestal. I think "One" blows. And like I said earlier, Cliff Burton was by far the best member of the band, so I tend to disregard anything after Master of Puppets. Someone mentioned above how good Orion was, well guess what you'll never hear that shit again.
    End of line.

Again, we're both interjecting personal preferences, with the phrase "I think" showing up quite regularly.

IN MY OPINION, Blackened, Frayed Ends of Sanity, Harvester of Sorrow are some of the most intricate songs they've ever produced, sure, One was not all that great, but then I don't care for MOST of the "radio" songs. ONE was their very first song written to be radio friendly. This is why the black album isn't on my list. Cliff Burton is DEAD, he's NOT coming back, why hate on a band that has done a pretty nice job of moving on.

Just listen to the new album without the negative expectations, you may be surprised.
