In public - he's a great guy. Behind the scenes - he's obviously suffering from some kind of.... Something... Mommy's mad at him? Dog ate his homework? Someone took his parking space at the mall? Something happened...

I say you leave things the way they are - they tend to sort themselves out over time. Norman will, at some time, come in here and explain all of this to everyone's satisfaction.
