Default To all those who've built a humidor

I'm looking to build a cabinet humi. From what I can tell I'll prolly spend more doing it myself but I'm a woodworker by hobby and this is a good excuse for a project. Besides, the wife tends to open the check book for "learning" projects The seal seems like the toughest hurdle. I'm just starting out as far as cabnetry goes. I have the tools but not much know-how yet. What else should I be looking out for? I'm planning on a drawer at the top for loose cigars and maybe two. Then two or three shelves for boxes. I'm guessing 24-36" X 18" X 36-48" exterior dimensions. How thick should I be looking at for the cedar lining. I'm thinking active humidification so two internal outlets. Is that overkill? As for the exterior, I was thinking cherry but could also go with something like poplar or even oak and then veneer. Is there anything to be gained with solid wood vs veneer? Perhaps flexing and cracking the seems...This is a long term project but I want to get started as soon as the Xmas rush is over.

To me solid vs veneer is like asking is 'gold plate' as valuable as 'gold bullion'.....

Working with solid wood offers strength and durability that is unequal. Woods natural characteristics does need to be kept in mind in the design, but anything less [to me] is cheap substitute.

When I cannot use wood in full form [ie some burls and figured woods with crotch grains etc] I resaw it myself so that it has real thickness but still durable.

Holy shit arlinliss! You do some beautiful work!! I'm not even close to your level. I completely agree about solid wood vs veneer as far as which is better. Having not worked with veneer I have no way to gauge how much the trade off would be in quality for cost savings. I need to come with some final plans and get hard cost estimates.

So I've been talking about the cabinet project with my wife for a couple weeks now. She's been, I thought, passive listening and occasionally nodding. I get that a lot She comes back from the grocery store and says "Can't you just use a cooler or used mini fridge or something and spend the difference on filling it? Then you can go back to smoking them rather than babble about the damn cabnet!" So I have a 150 qt cooler & a pound of beads coming and a wad of cash for more cigars. Though the old ball and chain may hassle, hound, or generally nag her way sometimes, but she sure has great timing when choosing not to

Have your wife call mine if you would please sir.

Stick the new cooler-dor in the middle of the bedroom and she may start to warm up to the idea of a nice cabinet. Wait until you fill it up of course.
