The Wire

Anyone seen this series? I'm not usually one for television, but the brother-in-law got me this series for Christmas. Usually at our house, our television watching is limited to Dinosaur Train and Word World - even the occasional House episode.

But I've never seen, or kept up with a show like The Wire. So I'm left wondering, does anyone else like this show? We're almost to the end of Season 2.

It's weird to see this thread today...the guys and I were just talking about this show last night! I haven't had the chance to watch any of it yet, but I've heard it's pretty good.

I'm guessing the dvd's are worth buying?

....or at least worthy of receiving as a Christmas present. Like you, I had heard a lot about the show, but didn't know much about it. I had originally asked for season 1, but my brother-in-law has some connections, and was able to get the whole series at a good deal. He told me it's his favorite show ever. Knowing him, that's quite the compliment.

See if you can rent a few episodes on iTunes or something. I'd give it a minimum of 5 episodes, though. This didn't 'hook' me until about then. But I'd say the hook is in pretty deep now.

I'd agree with the 5 episode assessment; I just finished the first season and it took me a while to get into it, but I'm fully in now.

I've seen all the SOA's, but don't consider it to be in the same ballpark in terms of writing. Don't get me wrong, Kurt Sutter does a great job, and I love the way he ended season 3, but The Wire is on a whole different playing field. It does start slow. And I've found that there are entire scenes that I have to watch again - I'd probably do well to watch entire episodes again. I think it's very much a 'blink and you miss it' kind of thing. But then again, I'm slow.
