Newbie recommendations

Hey,

I am new to cigar smoking and was wondering if you guys had some recommendations. I tried the Pardon 1964 aniversery, and i thought it was pretty good. I think i am trying to aim for maybe cigars that are sweet, creamy, chocolate, and coffee tasting.

Welcome from AZ. Those Padrons are great cigars, search/browse through the Reviews section.

Starting with Padron may make a lot of what you may have liked otherwise seem like a disappointment. They are better than most. I started several years ago with Dutch Masters and Backwoods and that really set the stage for me to like nearly everything else by comparison.

hummmm......I don't know too many cigars that meet that taste profile. Maybe you should try this.

thanks for the welcome! I tried the pardon just becuase that particular cigar came up over and over again when i was researching for cigars and no one gave it a negative review. I think the flavor profile i listed is what i would like, but i am still very new and willing to try anything good (even though it is very subjective). I just bought a small humidor so i want to fill it up with different kinds of cigars so i can get better at distingushing different tastes and flavors profiles to see what i would like. I see a lot of the sampler packs online, but from what i read on the forums, they are not really worth to get. I am not a everyday smoker so I am willing to spend more for a better cigar then less for more cigars (to a extend).

Hey, you have the same type of flavour profiles that I was interested in when I started. Its a great idea to check the reviews on here because people are great with descriptions. Also, I personally watch youtube videos from a user named cigarobsession. He has a review site and his videos are very good for choosing what to try. I will throw out some examples however, of cigars that I had when I first started. All pretty good, and pretty well priced. Gispert toro, is a nice easy stick, with creamy and grassy flavour (don't let the grass part scare you, I hated the sound of it but then loved the stick) cao gold robusto is a creamy tobacco taste that I like, and carlos torano casa torano toro. Those are my three recommendations based on my recent experience with starting out. They aren't too cheap or expensive, they aren't really strong or full bodied, and they burn well enough for you to not be side tracked the whole time.

oh! thanks for pointing that out! i figured he HAD to be on this site, but could never find him by cigarobsession. Does he spend much time on this site? i almost can imagine people being upset with him for having his own review site other than using the review section on this site.

oh my goodness, i had no idea of that messy breakup!! I read pretty far into that last discussion, and im quite surprised. Considering ashauler was the first on this site to reach out to me, im pulling the "backin up mah homeboy" on this one and i think i can find some other reviews to look at! I'm going to spend more time on the reviews from this site from now on. My only wish, was that people would put down prices more often. I understand why they don't, but often i get really excited about a cigar that i see a review for, and then I realize its a $30 stick that i can only dream of. Also, some people are getting rare and hard to find cigars out there, and I always feel bad when i know i will never find an opportunity to try them.

Never say never. You're just starting out. Search google, and get a handle on average prices from online retailers. Throw out the lows, and highs. There ya go.

There used to be a website called cigarcyclopedia which was stellar for a quick ref. comparing prices, but alas they went under.

Also, at this point, I wouldn't really worry about HTF stuff. Get a handle on what you like, in your price range.

Hi from Alberta, Canada.

Nobody else seems to have mentioned the Newbie Samplers to you so I suggest you check out the Newbie Sampler thread.

It would be well worth your while to do a sampler or two, with different members. Especially if your budget is limited. It's an excellent way to get to try some various cigars for a very good price. The guys doing the samplers aren't in it for the money, they're in it to share what they consider to be good cigars. My own personal experience with samplers has been wonderful and opened me up to many different cigars I may not have even tried otherwise.

If you go that route, I recommend you keep a list of what you have already tried and send that along to whomever you're doing a sampler with so they can give you some sticks you haven't tried as of yet.

thanks for the recommendations. I have a drew estate undercrown that i am going to try tonight. I am going to my B&M today to pick up some cigars for the weekend. I think i am definitely gonna try the CAO gold. What do you guys think about the 5 vegas gold cigar?

I think the 5 vegas cigars are decent cigars. I have moved away from them though. They are decent cigars for someone newer to cigar smoking. I haven't had construction issues with any of them. I think the A and AAA are the best of the group. Let me preface by saying that I am not a big fan of Connecticut wrapped cigars in general though there are some good ones. I typically prefer a stronger, fuller smoke. However I do find the 5 vegas Gold to be pretty decent. You can also find it cheap along with the rest of the 5 vegas line in different samplers. Samplers are always good to help you figure out what kind of cigar you like.

He did contact me about a Newbie sampler. It was the day he joined the forum and had not made a single post yet. I advised him to make an intro post and spend a couple weeks participating in the forum and then I would accommodate him with a newbie sampler.
