    Default Image=Uninformed? (Long)

I have spent most of my night reading some of the older posts in this forum and I came across one about the stereotype of cigar smokers. As I was reading, I noticed that the stereotypes are definitely not good. My conclusion is that most people are uninformed about cigars and think that they are just big cigarettes.

I belive that a big difference between cigars and cigarettes is the reason one smokes them. I mean, you don't drink cognac like you would drink beer. Two entirely different reasons, one to relax, and one to get the job done(ie. drunk or nicotine fix).

This conclusion is furthered by an experience I had at a local cigar/cigarette shop where the girl, yes, under 21 who was at the counter asked why I was getting cigars. I gave her the cognac/beer analogy, and she said that they both contain alcohol and do the same thing. Just like a cigar and cigarette are both tobacco.

Now that being said, This stereotype is certainly WRONG!!! This is the most fun-loving, wise-ass, relaxed bunch of people I have ever met next to my trombone studio. (Yes I am a musician, and yes the trombone section fits the real cigar smoker type very well. In fact, my teacher was a cigar smoker for a long time.) What are your thoughts on this stereotype?

I always tell people cigar smoking is a hobby, cigarette smoking is a habit.

Sure people like me have turned their cigar smokin into a habit (but I can go just fine for a week or so without smoking and never have that withdrawl effect), because we just love cigar smoking. It has actually gotten to the point where people who know or see me on a regular basis equate cigar smoking with my "image". I have actually had people not recognize me without a cigar in my hand.

This is the way I like to illustrate this point:

Cigar smokers are very selective. Sure cigarette smokers have their brand but in a pinch, they will smoke any cigarette. In a pinch, if a cigar smoker can't find a quality cigar, more often than not they will simply do without.

True, good point Ray....... I smoked cigarettes for a long time and quit for almost 4 years before even picking up a cigar. I have passed on many a cigar if I didn't have one I liked. With cigarettes: I was like a crack head...... no money? no more cigs? There has to be enough of one left in the ashtray to smoke

I was at a pub last week. It is a large pub, but it was a slow night. My friend who has worked for this bar in the past was already there having a drink when I showed up with my Partagas Lustiana. I ordered a drink from the Waitress and as I was waiting my friend warned me they dislike cigar smoke. I brushed it off... Then a few minutes after she brings me my beer she comes back to tell me the owner has taken a couple complaints about the smell and asked her to ask me to put out my cigar.... I was mad, I told her I would finish my beer and leave, never to return. And further more, how could some one with even half a brain condone cigarette smoking and allow ashtrays at EVERY table but disallow a cigar... After the waitress left I ranted to my friends too while I finished my beer. Anyways, what a sad affair, eh? Just thought I'd share my experience. I have heard a few times since I started smoking that some places don't allow it, but this is the first time it has ever actually happened.

The place is on 64ave and 4st NE, called Brewsters or something like that....

That has happened to me a lot. Though this was back in the day (up until a couple months ago, maybe 3) when I considered a captain black sweet to be a good cigar

Someone tell me that..I leave the beer and the bar. However on the flip side of that, I've had people leave the area when I strike up my Cigar. (It stinks) To my comment " Your converstaion sucks to, but I'm not complaining"

Try this, it has worked for me many times. I bring a few of my favorite small cigars (Camachos, Padrons, Cohibas and Zino) and smoke them. If anyone says something, I tell them I am frequent traveller to Europe and it is a European cigarette so leave me the alone and stop harassing me!
