    Default Badwhale Brewing Club

    I brewed beer on Sunday. It was awesome.

    Well, actually it wasn't that awesome, but it was pretty fun. I / we were having an off day, so it wasn't the religious experience I thought it was going to be. Anyway, I think I did a pretty good job following the instructions. The hop additions smelled so good. Didn't have any major messes. Only possibly compromised my sanitation once, and the "Ale Pail" is downstairs bubbling away right now at 64deg F. We will see if Hefty's favorite style, IPA, comes out to perfection.

    Judging by the enormous feedback, I'd like to report that I'm brewing an Amber Ale extract kit tonight. In the middle of the boil now.

    I have stalled on the brewing lately. I have a porter extract kit to do next. Maybe even as early as this friday. I did make a nice little shelf system for all my souping / brewing equipment.

    I have a co worker that brews excellent brew. He started with a fat tire replica and then a dry hopped Gaelic. Now he brews his own recipes. Really good stuff just always seems a bit under carbonated. I bring my growler in weekly for samples. I was considering brewing myself but dont think id find the time. I have looked into it tho, what kind of set up do you have ?

    Mr. Whale, I am still very seriously considering brewing soon. Maybe around the beginning of the year. I have a major time and space issue, not real sure where I would set up to do this.

    Out of total shit luck / whimsy I brewed up a batch of what I would call a robust porter maybe 4 weeks ago. I just finished the last sip of a draft tonight.
    Pretty good. I don't think it's going to win any prizes, but I am pleased with the outcome, and I was able to use some Cascade hops from my plants in the process.

    I'm hoping to brew up a cream ale extract kit next Friday. I am currently looking at some more kegging and fitting equipment to make my fridge a 3 keg setup.

    DanB: Sorry, I missed your post completely. I was just reading back through this. Anyway, I just have a little extract kit setup, hoping to go "pro" with a bigger kettle in the near future. For now, I usually run a 3.5gal batch for the boil on the residential stove, and then I have a wort chiller I run through the garden hose. After that, it's into a plastic 5 gallon bucket that I add water to get up to 5 gal, and pitch the yeast. A couple weeks later, I rack it into a glass carboy, and then a couple weeks after that, keg and gas, and enjoy.

    Whipped up a cream ale extract kit last friday while making 4 gallons of bean soup. Soon we will see.

    Also ordered 3 more kits:

    German Alt
    Nut Brown something Rye
    Chinook IPA

    Well, I kegged the Rye Brown Ale tonight, and tasted a little while checking the gravity. Pretty good!

    I plan on doing the German Alt tomorrow, however I notice that it requires some secondary action, so I think what I'll do, is go one week in primary, and then immediately to that last IPA kit I have and then they should be both ready around the same time.

    I have the Porter, Cream Ale and Brown Ale in the fridge right now.

    Friday night, I put the Altbier in the secondary. It had a pretty harsh alcohol smell in the primary, but I didn't want to let it go another week in there to tie up the primary.

    Today, I brewed the Chinook IPA, and it is currently in the primary.

    Have to decide what to get next. I think what I'll do is run this stash down, and get a keg of Celebration Ale for the holiday season, and maybe brew some bigger beers for when that kicks.

    Chinook has been racked to the secondary with a ghetto bung (film container.)

    Anyway, I finially got the Porter to kick. Two pulls on friday and it was out. I have to get that keg out of there, clean it, and rack the Altbier in there.

    kicked the Cream Ale during a party.

    The Altbier, I thought, tasted funny. Some other brewers sampling thought maybe it was subjected to infection, but others liked it.

    Kegged the IPA, and I honestly think it sucks. It's drinkable, but it's not an IPA by any strech of my palate's expectations. I have concluded that this is a result of fermenting temp.

    Now that it's cooler in the basement here, time to experiment with some of these again and see if I can do better. Need a little more low capital improvements, but I should be good.

    I'm doing a dark cherry stout extract kit right now....from 4 years ago.

    I have a session IPA that could go to keg, but i have to make a new beer fridge.

    I have an imperial stout conditioning.
