I'm glad I look up cigar reviews before buying!

I was looking over at CI for a fiver of something different. I came across a cigar called Fidalgo Negro that looked really nice. A dark Oscuro wrapper and attractive blue packaging. From what I read by people who have smoked these is that the wrapper is dyed black! The reviews ranged from terrible to OK with most being terrible. An old saying about books and covers comes to mind. One guy said the dye actually turned his lips black! It may not be as bad as it was portrayed, but I'm not gonna waste my money on it when there are so many higher rated smokes out there.

I ended up getting a fiver of Nestor Reserve, which seemed to rate pretty well with most people who've tried them.

Every night when I open up that humidor and find the cigar I am going to smoke, I look at those two Fire's staring at me. I think I am finally going to give in and light one up this weekend!

Yeah, a nice color scheme on the packaging gets my attention too but I am always suspicious.

One of the things that amazes me is the extent that many manufacturers go to in producing fancy packaging and many of them are guilty of it, including many top names as I'm sure you all know.

Perdomo's recent introduction (and I can't think of the name of it because this "fancy" packaging turns me off) looks like a cross between an old ammo chest and a treasure chest. Each cigar is spiral wrapped with a cedar split and the cigars are nestled in more cedar split in this ridiculouosly large box that could accomodate ten times as many cigars than are actually packaged in it.

Gurkha is guilty of this too but to a slightly lesser degree with their lavishly made Master's Choice boxes and a few others. The list goes on and on.

If you took away the fancy package we could all save some money on cigars. I want to smoke the cigar, not the box.

There is some history to the wood that makes up the boxes.

I haven't tried one yet. When I do I will post my impression.

Also I got caught up with the look of the "dos Capas" Gurhkas, Fancy smokes, lackluster taste.
