Will using a Zippo lighter really affect the taste?

I can see how it may affect the first few draws but after that....

I have read that the first few draws are supposed to be the best,

What do you guys think?

yep it certainly will effect the taste. You are better off with wooden matches or hot burning higly refined butane.

I use a zippo on occasion if its a small ring gauge cigar, but yeah it can mess with taste- if your into that sort of thing.

It all depends on whether or not you like your smokes to taste like lighter fluid...get a butane...

If you have one you can get a z-plus butane torch insert and then your zippo will rock

Hmmm...nope...no smartass here...it wasn't rhetorical...so, no, smartass absent...there are some that still light their BBQ's with fluid so all the food tastes like lighter fluid...they're used to it and apparently have grown to enjoy the subtle flavor of burnt petroleum mixed with their food...I would gues that there are some cigar smokers who enjoy the petroleum taste with their smokes too...a lot of the cigarette smokers still do...but then they like the thought of lung cancer too...so, nope...no smartass above...however, this might be considered smartass...by some, maybe...dunno if all would think it was smartass....hmmm, smartass here? Maybe yes, maybe no...all depends on how you look at it and your definition of smartass...heh...

PS - I was looking at the webpage for Z-plus and it looks sweet...neat way to turn a favorite zippo into a butane...thinking of buying a Z-plus myself, then finding a zippo I like just to have a butane zippo...sweet...

No it will not. I have yet to see a person be able to tell the difference if their cigar was lit with a Zippo vs. a butane lighter. I've performed and seen experiements performed on people who swear they can tell the difference. When all is said and done, if they do not KNOW which kind of lighter was used to light the cigar, the cannot identify a cigar lit by a Zippo vs a cigar lit by another method.

99% of this whole "Zippo" issue is psychological and urban legend.

Since some people think lighter fluid gives cigars a weird taste, would a butane lighter do the same? one that isn't a butane torch, just a regular flame.

I have never tasted the difference in using a Zippo lighter.

Wooden matches can sometimes be a nuisance to carry around and those torch lighters can sometimes be very expensive and tempermental (one piece of dust and they don't work properly)

Good ole trusty Zippo never lets me down. I have heard that you should hold the cigar near the top of the flame if the "theory" of the lighter fluid taste scares you.

This is just my opinion and my 2¢

I dunno...maybe my taste buds are more sensative...or it could be my nose, but I swear I could always taste the lighter fluid...but hey, I've been wrong before, so I can't take a postive stance on this issue one way or another...how's that for fence-sitting?

I've had the occasional Zippo cigar light, and there is definitely a perceptable fluid taste for the first couple puffs. After that, I've never been able to tell the difference. If my taste buds are trashed from a rich meal or a prior smoke, I can't tell at all.

I smoke outside a lot. Since the only kind of lighter I know of that can stay lit when the wind starts to blow is a torch lighter, that's the only kind I own.
