In the context of the Internet, a troll is a person who posts inflammatory messages intended to cause a disruption in discourse. The word is also often used to describe such messages.

Trolls are individuals who want to destroy rational discourse and reducing an otherwise (mostly) useful website to something resembling post-apocalyptical vision of something or other...
Most of them tend to get bored and move on if ignored. Respond and the consequences are never good: it creates an unfriendly and hostile impression which discourages visitors from joining, casual members stop checking in, established members give up in disgust and move on.
Remember, never get into a (public) argument with a fool. Other people might not be able to tell which one of you is the fool.
