Thread: wine with cigars

    Default wine with cigars

I have a few bottles of wine and I'm about to break open a bottle to have with a stick. Generally, I prefer sipping on some tequila with a cigar. I just have that taste. Any preferences on some wine? What types do you prefer? I tried a bottle of Malbec and I was not crazy with it. I have a bottle of bordeaux, cab sauv, and also merlot. I am thinking about busting out the merlot or bordeaux. I am not sure yet. Tough decisions.

Personally, I enjoy a good tawny Port with my evening smoke.

Tonight I had a glass of Glenmorangie single malt with my Saint Luis Rey. Very nice combo!

    Threadjack!

billyjenkins, you have out done yourself. Most posts by a new member in the shortest amount of time. Clearly you know some of our other post-whores Bill and George and will make a nice addition. Welcome to the board!

And now for your regularly scheduled program:

Heavy red wine for a heavy cigar, a light and airy (probably white wine) for an easy cigar.

    Peace

I don't think I have ever tried port, but I have read about it on some other posts. I'll have to try a bottle soon. I think it is a dessert wine?

I generally liker a good Bordeaux with a cigar. Port is good too, but I prefer an LBV or Ruby to Tawny.

Sorry Cat. I meant to say a bottle of Thunderbird I had poured into a Glenfiddich 21yo bottle that I found on the ground at one of my Jaguar car shows.

A good Riesling does it for me. After the cigar though, not during.
There's only two kinds of cigars, the kind you like and the kind you don't.

Ohh man.. I've been hooked on this Columbia Winery 2004 Cellar Master's Riesling. I've got 3 bottles in the fridge waiting for me ;-).

Very sweet, the chicks love it, and at $10 a bottle you can't beat it.

I'm not partial to wine with cigars. The exception being Port. The reason being that I don't much like highly tannic or acid tasting drinks with cigars. Spicy or roasty drinks go much better IMHO. Therefore, a mulled wine would probably do OK. It's almost the season for hot mulled wine and cider too! But I digress. My favorite drink to go with a cigar is a dark Belgian Ale or a Barleywine. The spicy and fruity character of these beers are a perfect companion to a medium or full bodied cigar. Light bodied cigars seem to fare a bit better with a Belgian Tripel or well hopped pale ale.

I'll have to tell my wife about that. She currently enjoys the Santa Margherita Pinot but it is a little more pricey at $20-22 a bottle.

I am not partial to wine with anything. Give me a nice cold beer, or, if it is the weekend...I will drink the Captain like there's no tomorrow!!

  15. Talking Here are some good ports

Here are some good ports to try with a medium cigar. Warre's Warrior port or Warre's Nimrod tawny port both about 16$ a bottle. Warre's also has a Otima 10 year and 20 year port. They are both great but are more expensive and I would try them latter after you have a couple of ports. Galaways Australian tawny port is one of the best and it is about 22$ a bottle. I have aslo tried Grams LBV or Late bottle vintage but it is so mild that it just okay. One of the best tawny ports I have found is Rosemount Estaes Old Benson port. It is hard to find but it is worth every penny. In general and in my experince I stay away from Ruby ports and LBV when pairing with a good cigar. The tawny ports really have full taste to enhance the cigar senjoyment.
