    Default Anyone Here Weld?

Hey guys. Just wondering if anyone welds. My dad has been a welder for 30 some odd years. I thought about taking a class at the local vocational center to learn how to weld. Any of you guys ever done this?

I worked as a welder/fabricator at a trailer shop for four years, also had a body shop for a few years. I can arc, MIG, and TIG.

The only experience I have is with arc welding. I did it a few times back in high school.

I hate arc welding, dirty and nasty, crude.

You forgot gas welding (with acetylene torches). I'm sure you can do that too!

I do gas, MIG & arc but I'm not that good at it. My brother is a heck of a lot better at it than I am so I when I need it done right, I call him. I can get by in a pinch if I have to but the results usually aren't pretty.

I'v tried gas welding a few times but never got good enough with it to do anything, dont have the patience for it. Only thing I ever use acetylene for is cutting and heating.

Gas welding (brazing?) takes a special knack. I have an uncle who can do it. I've even seen him use a coat hanger instead of the brass rods. I've got a brother who welds and that's pretty damn handy because I don't at all.

take the class. it was one of the funnest classes i've ever taken. i took the basic welding class (intro stick, mig, tig and oxy acetylene) and Stick I. i'll probably be taking more classes in the future and buying a welder sometime in the future.

you can braze and weld with a gas setup. the difference is that in brazing the base metal doesn't melt, only the filler rod. the bond between the metal is only made by the filler, kind of like glueing two peices of paper together. i never got to good at the brazing part of it. couldn't keep the damn thing cool enough.
