got a humidor as a gift, having some problems. pics...

New to this site, but not to cigars. As a wedding gift a year or so ago I got a homemade winerack/humidor. As far as storing wine, its awesome, plenty of space. However, the humidor has come on hard times. The guy who built it for me lined one side with cedar and apparantly used wood glue or something, and its seeping through. Everywhere. I don't even use it anymore because its so sticky.

I'm assuming that the humidity was to much for the glue, but if that's the case, what is the alternative? Basically, I'm assuming I'm going to have to rip the wood up and start over. What do I do differently to do it right?

But.
First, ask him if he used glue and spanish cedar. Find out what kind of glue, see if you can use a heat gun to get rid of it, if you need a solvent then you now have a nice box to keep your wine opener and coasters in.

If you can melt it off, do that, wash and clean and let dry. And try to replace with spanish cedar.

Hubby said that he has never seen glue seep though ceder like that before. He thinks if it is in the glue that is seeping though then the ceder he used was too thin. He also said that he would have used contact cement to do that type of bonding. He said no easy way out of this maybe you can reheat it and the cedar will lift free from the box. There is a chemical they sell that will remove the glue from the base. He suggests using a bit thicker cedar with contact cement but he said beware you have once chance to get it right once the ceder touches the base.

Spanish cedar can "Bleed" , what this actually means is that sap in the wood is coming out of the wood . I would suspect that the wood is bleeding and that it's not actually the glue coming through . You could try using a small cabinet scraper to remove the sap , or try using warm distilled water to remove the sap . Never wipe your humi down on the inside with any chemical products . If it is the glue coming through , the cedar would have to be very thin , about 1/16th of an inch or thinner , and the glue would still be wet to be able to come through which I doubt . Does it still smell like spanish cedar in the humidor ? If it does then your wood is bleeding the sap out . If it smells like glue then it's probably the glue .

I talked to my friend who made it just before getting online tonight and he said pretty much everything that you've just said. Its the spanish cedar bleeding out sap. So thats great news. DOesn't smell anything like glue, still smells very much like cedar.

So it looks like we've at least isolated what it is. Now to get rid of it. I'll try some warm water later this evening and see how it goes.

Anything to help a BOTL . You may also be able to lightly sand out the sap .
