Sorry to hear about (and see) that. I think where things may have gone awry is when you laid the damp or soaked sponge in direct contact with the wood in a sealed environment. If you're gonna put something wet, put it in a ziploc bag (but do not seal it) so it doesn't have direct contact.

Now how to get rid of it - my opinion and experience. You want to wipe of off with rubbing alcohol, then let it dry, then wipe it off with more rubbing alcohol and that *should* do it - especially if it's a new humi. It'll leave stains but that's life. You can get rid of the stains by sanding it off - by hand or by using a Black & Decker type Mouse sanding tool.
