    Unhappy Smoke odor in Humidor

OK, I admit it I knew better and still did it. Stupid me!

I have a new larger humidor which is fine but my older small 20.00 humidor has a smokey odor because I put a half smoked and extinguished cigar in there overnight. Nothing else was in it except some CI gel.

I have aired it out. wiped it down with distilled water and finally have added some baking soda in a dish with another dish of distilled water to no avail.

The only thing left to do is just to leave it open for weeks and hope it eventually goes away. Any other suggestions other than a sharp stick in the eye?

    Thanks

dump the gel - it's absorbed the stink.
Look at that... I plumb got myself 5 raisins and 7 termites.

Throw it out. Wood has a habit of taking on smells like that and never letting go. You can get 20 count humidors for next to nothing on ebay.

weeeeeeeeeeeeell.... i'd still keep it... could put any *cough* flavored cigars in them or line it with felt and use it as a Man-box (yeah, we have watches, cufflinks, keys, etc.)

see what happens in a couple weeks. then put two sheets of toilet paper (one dry and one moistened on a piece of saran wrap), leave it in for another two weeks, and smell them. if it still reeks, then do the Man-box. Just seems like a shame to throw it out...

Baking soda for a week and see if that works.

If it doesn't, see if your state lets you buy 190 proof ethanol (Everclear, or any other near pure ethanol) and wipe it down. But be ready for it to possibly eat the wood if it's cedar MDF. That stuff will strip epoxy, so it'll do a number of cheap MDF resin.

You can try one other thing that we usually reserve for beatles, and some pipe smokers use it to clean out their pipes. Everclear. Completely wipe down the humidor with it. Then let dry for a day, then re-season, if the smell is still there, toss it. 190 proof is best, pure grain alchohol, but you can try 151 or less if that is the legal max amount in your state or country.
