I don't agree completely with his opinion, but some of it, I do agree with.
What you should do is, support/attack his viewpoint on its own merits/faults, without placing it in context with his sons death.

Well, I feel sympathy for him since he lost his son in such a horrible way. And he is free to say whatever he wants. But his loss does not make him immune from criticism. He's free to say what he wants but others are free to comment on his statements and positions. I wouldn't call him an asshat, but I would say is his making political hay from his sons death just like Cindy Shee-me-make-hay-of-my-sons-death-han.
