EDIT:
OK, many of you are aware of our trials and tribulations with our postal service. I have waited as long as 27 days for a package coming this way, and 26 days going south. If I package up a number of smokes (anywhere from 4 or 5 to a dozen or more, it costs like $12-13 for expedited service (the cheapest service I can get a tracking #, which, by the way, can't be tracked once it crosses the border) and it will take 7 business days minimum. I packaged up a sampler for a guy the other day and while standing in line at the P/O, I realized I hadn't put in a water pillow or some dampened paper towel. Rather than go back home, I asked the lady behind the counter how fast I could get it there and she said 4 business days. I agreed and it cost me $19.03, and had to but the special envelope for $2.29. Now while I realize there's Customs involved when it comes to regular delivery, it's a pretty expensive piss-poor service in general.
Two weeks ago, I was on a shopping trip with the Bride in Detroit and brought 4 small packages (3-10 sticks) to a UPS Store someone was raving about. How they do the packaging for you, yadda yadda. Well, that was fine, except those 4 packages cost me $52 USD!!! I said, well, the service is great (4 days or less) but that's still pretty pricey.
So yesterday, I'm going to Detroit again shopping for golf stuff and I pull from my Richmond experience with USPS to ship a few smokes to a couple of Brothers on this board. I had the sticks in bubble wrap and in golf ball boxes glued shut, I've found that box is a real convenient size. I go on-line to look for a P/O close to the area I go, and lo & behold there's one right between a cigar B&M I ususlly hit and the area I like to go shopping (2 mile distance) so I figure I'll check that out.
This place is a huge, bright room with desks all over the place to fill out addresses and stuff, and there's displays showing packaging of all types and sizes. A guy walks up to me and says "How may I help you today sir?" I hold up one of the boxes and say "I have 2 of these to mail and was wondering the best way." He asked how quick I wanted them to get there, and I said before Thursday. He walked over to a display and picked up a box and said "This size will cost about $4, the box is free and we'll tape it for you." I pick up another, thank him and walk over to a desk to address one to NY and one to CA. I go up to the counter and hand the lady the unfolded boxes, and the packages. She folds, tapes and weighs them, asks if I need tracking, delivery confirmation or insurance on them. I say no and she asks if there's anything else she can do for me today and I say no. She tells me the total is $8.10 and they'll probably be at their destination by Wednesday, but maybe Thursday because it was 3:00 PM and it may be a bit late.
Well, let it suffice to say that USPS has made a new friend, and Canada Post can go their merry way doing what they do worst and most expensive!!!
